How Bad Is Unemployment? ‘Literally Off the Charts’

The Labor Department said the economy shed more than 20.5 million jobs in April, sending the unemployment rate to 14.7 percent as the coronavirus pandemic took a devastating toll. The nation’s economic distress came into greater focus on Friday, offering a snapshot unseen since the Great Depression.

Minority unemployment surges, erasing progress in a ‘heartbreaking’ loss

The unemployment rate for black workers jumped to 16.7 percent, nearly 3 times its level in February — before coronavirus shutdowns took hold — and the highest since early 2010. For Hispanic or Latino workers, the unemployment rate jumped to 18.9 percent, up from 6 percent in March and the highest on records going back to the 1970s.

Wall Street climbs as global markets rally

Investors were cheered by the prospects of countries further reopening their economies, despite worries that those efforts could lead to a rise in infections. They were also bolstered by announcements from the United States and China that appeared to back their Phase 1 trade deal, which would bring their two-year trade war to a temporary truce.

China and U.S. Signal Harmony on Trade, Despite Broader Tensions

The two countries said on Friday — Thursday night, Washington time — that their top trade and financial officials had held talks via conference call, their first since the coronavirus pandemic ballooned in late January. Although President Trump had suggested this week that the White House would take a skeptical look at whether China was living up to its commitments under the truce, the two countries signaled that their agreement was on track.

Scrutiny of Social-Distance Policing as 35 of 40 Arrested Are Black

Tensions are increasingly flaring in black and Hispanic neighborhoods over officers’ enforcement of social-distancing rules, leading some prominent elected officials to charge that the New York Police Department is engaging in a racist double standard as it struggles to shift to a public health role in the coronavirus crisis.

Coronavirus could 'smoulder' in Africa for several years, WHO warns

The Covid-19 pandemic could “smoulder” in Africa for several years after killing as many as 190,000 people in the coming 12 months, the World Health Organization has said.

The WHO warned last month that there could be 10m infections on the continent within six months, though experts said the pandemic’s impact would depend on governments’ actions.

US mercenary says group plotted to seize Venezuela's presidential palace

Airan Berry, 41, was one of two US mercenaries captured by Venezuelan security forces this week after what appears to have been a catastrophically executed attempt to topple Maduro by sneaking into the South American country in a pair of weather-beaten fishing boats.

In an edited televised confession, broadcast by Venezuelan state television on Thursday, Berry claimed one of the group’s key objectives was to commandeer the heavily fortified Miraflores palace in the capital, Caracas.

Asked how they planned to extract Maduro from the 19th-century building, the Iraq veteran answered: “I’m not exactly sure – however necessary.”

'His head wasn't in the world of reality': how the plot to invade Venezuela fell apart

The plan to overthrow Venezuela’s president, Nicolás Maduro, and bundle him off to Florida to face drug trafficking charges seemed foolproof to a former US army staff sergeant, Jordan Goudreau, as he mapped it out in a luxury Miami apartment in late 2019. The 43-year-old Canadian-American was certain his years as a green beret in Iraq and Afghanistan had prepared him for the task.

Representatives of Juan Guaidó – the opposition leader recognised as Venezuela’s legitimate president by the US and most of its allies – signed a fat contract engaging Goudreau to overthrow Maduro.

But in interviews with the Guardian, a senior opposition figure said they grew to doubt Goudreau and eventually broke with him months before he launched a disastrous raid this week that echoed the botched 1961 Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba.

Sea levels could rise more than a metre by 2100, experts say

Based on new knowledge of climate sensitivity and polar ice melt, the experts say coastal cities should prepare for an impact that will hit sooner than predicted by the United Nations and could reach as high as 5 metres by 2300.

In the worst-case scenario – with rising emissions and global heating of 4.5C above pre-industrial levels – the study estimates the surface of the world’s oceans in 2100 will be between 0.6 and 1.3 metres higher than today, which would potentially engulf areas home to hundreds of millions of people.

Uber, Lyft and Airbnb cut thousands of jobs as pandemic batters Silicon Valley

On Wednesday, Uber became the latest company to announce cuts, revealing in a filing to the Securities and Exchange Commission that it will lay off 3,700 workers – roughly 14% of its global workforce.

Yet not all tech firms are suffering in equal measure. In the first three months of 2020, Amazon made more than $33m per hour, according to its earnings report last week, boosted by a surge in ordering from customers locked down at home. The delivery startup Instacart had to hire 300,000 workers in less than a month as more people began to order groceries online. The online video conference tool Zoom, which was valued at $36 per share when it went public in 2019, is now valued at $150 per share and its user base recently surpassed 300 million.

Libya: Turkish strategy leaves Haftar on the defensive

In recent months however, Turkey's technological and tactical backing for the militias aligned with Fayez Serraj's Government of National Accord (GNA) in the west has seen Haftar's advance stopped and even reversed in some strategic areas.

Turkey signed a maritime and military deal with the GNA late last year, and it started bearing fruit in April, with GNA forces making significant gains over the last month.

Part of that strategy was installing new air defense systems, which allowed Turkish drones to start a major campaign of air strikes, crippling Haftar's ability to resupply and the UAE's own drone strikes.
