Too Cold for an Oil Cut? Russia’s Move Reveals a Long-Running Bluff

MOSCOW — For most of the post-Soviet period, energy officials in Russia have resisted OPEC entreaties to participate in production cuts to help prop up oil prices, arguing that doing so was impossible because of the country’s cold climate. This week, confronted by a gusher of unsaleable oil and no place to put it, Russian energy executives unveiled plans to reduce production by a fifth by shutting down wells, many of them in the Arctic.

Trump 'very confident' of Covid-19 vaccine in 2020 and predicts up to 100,000 US deaths

The president used a Fox News “virtual town hall” on Sunday night to repeat his regular virus talking points, including that a vaccine was not far away, Covid-19 was China’s fault and the economy would not only recover but “grow like crazy”.

“We are very confident we are going to have a vaccine by the end of the year,” Trump said. Scientists have repeatedly warned that a vaccine may take 12-18 months or longer.

Trump in April predicted 60,000 American lives would be lost but on Sunday said: “We’re going to lose anywhere from 75, 80 to 100,000 people. That’s a horrible thing.”

EU leaders to hold coronavirus vaccine virtual fundraising conference

The online fundraiser is projected to raise at least €7.5 billion to develop a vaccine and treatments for the virus. Leaders also said that any potential vaccine should be "available, accessible and affordable to all."

German Health Minister Jens Spahn said on Sunday that it could take years to develop a vaccine. Although there have been a number of promising developments, the production of a safe and effective vaccine remains one of "the most challenging" tasks in medicine, Spahn told ARD broadcaster. The country began human trials on a product last Wednesday, with a small group of 12 participants.

GE Moves to Cut Roughly 13,000 Aviation Workers

Jet-engine division will cut 25% of staff after coronavirus crippled air travel

By Thomas Gryta

General Electric Co. is cutting roughly 13,000 jobs in its jet-engine business, expanding its planned cost-cutting efforts as the coronavirus pandemic cripples the aviation industry. GE said Monday in a memo to staff that it plans to cut 25% of its global aviation workforce in coming months. The unit, which employed about 52,000 people at the end of 2019, makes engines for Boeing Co. and Airbus SE. Its biggest customers have cut production as airlines ground hundreds of planes.

Auto Sales Are Accelerating, Auto Stocks Might Not

A sales recovery has historically sent a rare buy signal for auto stocks, but history may have moved on

By Stephen Wilmot

April was the worst month for U.S. auto sales since at least the mid-1970s. Investors with an eye for history might paradoxically see that as a rare signal to buy auto stocks. The risk—and it seems an overwhelming one in a world where Tesla’s market value is roughly twice that of the Detroit Three combined—is that the auto industry has entered a new era.

Sharp declines are recorded in India, Italy and elsewhere as the global economy continues to founder

AI Software Gets Mixed Reviews for Tackling Coronavirus

Hospitals hope technology can ease pressure on doctors facing the pandemic, but some have noticed errors

By Parmy Olson

Faced with a burgeoning number of Covid-19 patients, hospitals are turning to artificial intelligence to help with diagnoses and assessments. So far, the results are mixed. Several hospitals around the world have started using AI software—which learns from experience—to check lung scans for signs and severity of the disease. Some radiologists have used AI in combination with other signals, like a patient’s oxygen levels, to help doctors make some treatment decisions.
