Worst Economy in a Decade. What’s Next? ‘Worst in Our Lifetime.’
U.S. gross domestic product, the broadest measure of goods and services produced in the economy, fell at a 4.8 percent annual rate in the first quarter of the year, the Commerce Department said Wednesday. That is the first decline since 2014, and the worst quarterly contraction since 2008, when the country was in a deep recession.

Trump to order meat-processing plants to continue operating amid pandemic
Donald Trump is set to sign an executive order on Tuesday meant to soften the blow of a chicken and pork shortage among other meat on American supermarket shelves.
The order will use the Defense Production Act to classify meat processing as critical infrastructure, forcing meat production plants to stay open as the president and agricultural leaders say the coronavirus outbreak is threatening the country’s food supply.
Jair Bolsonaro faces inquiry into claims of meddling with police
“The president of the republic … is also subject to the laws, just like any other of the country’s citizens,” the supreme court judge Celso de Mello noted in his decision on Monday night.

Fate of Vaca Muerta oil and gas fields may point to way forward on fossil fuels
Whether the post-pandemic world moves back to fossil fuels or forward to a clean economy will become clearer in the coming weeks as the International Monetary Fund and Argentina decide whether to continue support for the vast Vaca Muerta oil and gas fields in Patagonia.
Analysts say Vaca Muerta (which means Dead Cow in English) is now among the most economically vulnerable fossil fuel projects in the world. Climate campaigners believe it could be one of the first places where a decision is made to “keep it in the ground”.
The Argentinian government threw the project into limbo last week, when the minister of productive development, Matías Kulfas, called Vaca Muerta “an issue that will have to wait” until the crisis was over. Last month, the chairman of Argentina’s national oil company, YPF, said the oil price collapse “puts all Argentine oil production in doubt”.

Democracy 'weakened and undermined' worldwide — study
BY MELISSA SOU-JIE VAN BRUNNERSUM
Germany's Bertelsmann Stiftung has said that the number of people who are governed poorly and less democratically is increasing. The study found that inequality and repression are weakening the global market economy.
The German foundation said Wednesday that the main causes of diminishing democracy globally are abuse of power and cronyism, which in turn widen social and economic inequalities.
For the sixth time in a row, the ratings of the BTI for the quality of democracy, market economy and governance have declined, now to their lowest since the BTI survey began. Of the 137 countries currently assessed, the BTI regards 74 as democracies and 63 as autocracies.

They could swarm through a human body, identifying, diagnosing and then infiltrating virus particles to destroy them from the inside, while others "train" immune cells to attack viral particles.

By Doug Cameron and Andrew Tangel
Boeing Co. plans to cut jetliner production and 10% of its workforce in response to the airline industry’s coronavirus-driven crisis, but said it has sufficient funding options to adapt. Globalization Is Down but Not Out Yet
By addressing flaws exposed by pandemic, nations could build a wiser, more resilient global system
By Greg Ip
Globalization was on the ropes when the pandemic delivered a gut punch. Barriers to trade and immigration, already on the rise, have been joined by travel bans, border closures and restrictions on medical exports. Trade volumes are in free fall. Yet Covid-19 doesn’t have to split the world apart. Whether the global order fragments or emerges wiser and more resilient depends critically on the lessons that national leaders draw.

The conglomerate’s first-quarter revenue fell 8% and it posted operating losses in several of its business units, but the unit that manufactures and maintains jet engines was hardest hit.
Spotify Adds Subscribers, Lowers Revenue Guidance Amid Ad Pullback
The coronavirus pandemic has dented ad sales and seen users listen more at home
By Anne Steele
Spotify Technology SA continued to add paying and advertising-supported users in the most recent quarter, but it lowered its revenue guidance for the year as ad sales were dented amid uncertainty around the coronavirus pandemic.
The global health crisis began to affect the business in late February, the company said, with a notable decline in daily active users and consumption in hard-hit markets such as Italy and Spain. Listening has started to rebound in recent weeks, with consumption in many markets “meaningfully recovered.”

Oil's Collapse Is a Geopolitical Reset In Disguise
From Russia to Mexico, U.S. foreign policy makers face new risks and opportunities.
The world is on the cusp of a geopolitical reset. The global pandemic could well undermine international institutions, reinforce nationalism and spur de-globalization.
