Iran satellite launch 'sends a message' on failed US pressure

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) surprised the world last week with a successful launch of its first military satellite dubbed Nour (light) into the Earth's orbit.

The satellite was on board a previously unknown launch vehicle named Qased, or messenger, and was deployed from a military base in Semnan province, east of the capital, Tehran.

The launch - carried out on the 41st anniversary of IRGC's establishment - brought an end to a string of previous failures in developing Iran's aerospace programme. Tehran has not released much information about the initiative, but Major-General Hossein Salami, the IRGC's chief, described it as a "multi-purpose" satellite that expands the Revolutionary Guard's "strategic intelligence".

Dysfunction in the oil market intensified Tuesday, sending the most popularly traded U.S. oil benchmark at one point to its lowest level since at least 1986 before it recovered somewhat. The world is awash with too much oil at a time when coronavirus lockdowns on driving, flying and industrial activity has all but eliminated the need for the stuff.

Oil Slump, Coronavirus Create a Perfect Storm for Nigeria’s Economy

As economic pain ripples to the developing world, Nigeria’s dependence on oil puts its economy under severe threat

By Joe Parkinson and Benoit Faucon

The crash in oil prices and the economic fallout from the coronavirus together pose what could be an existential threat for Africa’s largest economy and biggest crude producer.

Nigeria, a country of 200 million people, is slashing production faster than any other major oil economy following the precipitous plunge in global prices. Cargo ships full of millions of barrels of Nigerian crude have nowhere to go, with much of the world on lockdown. The Pandemic Is Accelerating Coal’s Demise

Electricity in Europe, India, China, and parts of the U.S. is less and less reliant on coal.

By Akshat Rathi

You can add coal to the list of global commodities struggling during the pandemic. Prices haven’t yet turned negative (like oil), but coronavirus is accelerating the demise of the dirtiest fossil fuel. In much of the world coal power is currently more expensive than gas and renewables, which explains why its share in the electricity mix has fallen in Europe, India, China, and parts of the U.S. The power markets in these four regions are large and varied. That makes the uniformity of coal’s decline even more surprising.

Fed Has Big Decision to Make About Giving More Guidance on Rates

By Matthew Boesler

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell has already cut interest rates to nearly zero, but he still has to decide if more should be said about how long they will stay there. U.S. central bankers have been busy rolling out emergency lending facilities to provide liquidity to an economy largely shut down by the coronavirus pandemic.
