In Tense Exchange, Trump and Macron Put Forth Dueling Visions for NATO

LONDON — A once-cordial relationship between President Trump and President Emmanuel Macron of France devolved in a dramatic fashion on Tuesday, as the two leaders publicly sparred over their approach to containing the threat of terrorism and a shared vision for the future of NATO, a 70-year-old alliance facing existential threats on multiple fronts.

In a lengthy appearance before reporters, the president met a cool reception from Mr. Macron, who earlier in the day Mr. Trump derided as “very insulting” for his recent remarks on the “brain death” of the alliance. When asked to address his earlier comments on the French leader, Mr. Trump, a leader averse to face-to-face confrontation, initially demurred, but Mr. Macron was direct. “My statement created some reactions,” Mr. Macron said. “I do stand by it.”

What followed was an extended, terse back-and-forth over trade, immigration, and Mr. Trump’s relationship with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey. Mr. Trump’s interactions with the Turkish president are also sure to be closely watched. Mr. Erdogan, who has already upset NATO allies by purchasing a sophisticated Russian antiaircraft missile system, the S-400, is now threatening to oppose NATO’s plans to update the defense of Poland and the Baltic countries if the alliance does not join him in labeling some Kurdish groups as terrorists.

Trump Warns Trade Talks With China May Last Past 2020 Election

LONDON — President Trump signaled on Tuesday that he was in no rush to end a long trade war with China, suggesting that he could wait until after the 2020 presidential election to strike a deal and sending stock prices tumbling. “I have no deadline,” Mr. Trump told reporters during a wide-ranging 52-minute appearance in London with Jens Stoltenberg, the NATO Secretary General. “In some ways I like the idea of waiting until after the election for the China deal.” He added: “But they want to make a deal now, and we’ll see whether or not the deal’s going to be right, it’s got to be right.”

Mr. Trump’s comments rattled European stock markets and sent the Dow Jones industrial average down 400 points by 10 a.m. They cast more uncertainty on an agreement he said he had made weeks ago with China’s top trade envoy, Vice Premier Liu He. They announced in mid-October that they had reached a so-called Phase 1 trade agreement that would allow Chinese purchases of American agricultural goods to resume while the United States would cancel additional tariffs scheduled for Oct. 15.  But completion of the Phase 1 deal has remained elusive, and the two sides have continued to grapple over terms as an important date quickly approaches. While Mr. Trump said Tuesday that he had no deadline, he has threatened to impose another round of tariffs on more than $100 billion worth of Chinese goods on Dec. 15.

China Uses DNA to Map Faces, With Help From the West

TUMXUK, China — In a dusty city in the Xinjiang region on China’s western frontier, the authorities are testing the rules of science. With a million or more ethnic Uighurs and others from predominantly Muslim minority groups swept up in detentions across Xinjiang, officials in Tumxuk have gathered blood samples from hundreds of Uighurs — part of a mass DNA collection effort dogged by questions about consent and how the data will be used.

In Tumxuk, at least, there is a partial answer: Chinese scientists are trying to find a way to use a DNA sample to create an image of a person’s face. The technology, which is also being developed in the United States and elsewhere, is in the early stages of development and can produce rough pictures good enough only to narrow a manhunt or perhaps eliminate suspects. But given the crackdown in Xinjiang, experts on ethics in science worry that China is building a tool that could be used to justify and intensify racial profiling and other state discrimination against Uighurs.

In the long term, experts say, it may even be possible for the Communist government to feed images produced from a DNA sample into the mass surveillance and facial recognition systems that it is building, tightening its grip on society by improving its ability to track dissidents and protesters as well as criminals. Some of this research is taking place in labs run by China’s Ministry of Public Security, and at least two Chinese scientists working with the ministry on the technology have received funding from respected institutions in Europe. International scientific journals have published their findings without examining the origin of the DNA used in the studies or vetting the ethical questions raised by collecting such samples in Xinjiang.

China considers banning 'odious' US politicians over Xinjiang criticism

Hu Xijin, editor of the state-run Global Times, said Beijing was considering banning all US diplomatic passport holders from entering Xinjiang in retaliation for US legislation that would punish Chinese officials for human rights abuses.

U.S. senators urge sanctions on Turkey over Russian S-400 missile system

WASHINGTON, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- Two U.S. Senators on Monday urged the U.S. State Department to sanction Turkey, which has shown no signs of giving up its Russian S-400 missile system. Turkey signed a 2.5 billion U.S. dollar agreement with Russia to purchase S-400 missile batteries in 2017, and began taking deliveries in July this year.

"The time for patience has long expired. It's time you apply the law," senators Chris Van Hollen and Lindsey Graham said in a letter addressed to U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, referring to the Countering America's Adversaries through Sanctions Act, which has imposed sanctions on countries like Iran and Russia.

The letter came about 20 days after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's visit to the White House in November. Despite U.S. efforts to mend ties, Erdogan has not committed to abandoning the S-400 missile system, but has promised to engage in further talks. Recently, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu drove home the point that Turkey never promised to not install or use the Russian-made S-400 missile system.

DPRK vice foreign minister urges U.S. to resume talks before year end

PYONGYANG, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- Ri Thae Song, vice minister of Foreign Affairs of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), urged the United States on Tuesday to start dialogue with Pyongyang before the year-end deadline passes.

"Drawing nearer is the year-end time limit the DPRK set for the U.S." to bring practical action to the negotiating table, the official Korean Central News Agency quoted Ri as saying. Ri said the dialogue touted by the United States is "nothing but a foolish trick hatched to keep the DPRK bound to dialogue and use it in favor of the political situation and election in the U.S.."

Pyongyang and Washington held working-level talks on denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula in early October in Stockholm, which broke down after only a few hours. The vice minister said the DPRK has done its utmost not to backtrack from the important steps it has taken on its own initiative. The DPRK said recently it was losing patience and would not hold talks for the sake of it unless Washington changes its hostile policies towards Pyongyang.

Over 500 Syrian refugees return to homeland from Lebanon

BEIRUT, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- More than 500 Syrian refugees returned on Tuesday to their homeland from Lebanon, the National News Agency reported. Syrian refugees from different areas in Lebanon, including Burj Hammoud, Tripoli, Bekaa, Nabatieh and other regions, returned to their homeland by bus under the supervision of the Lebanese general security.

More than one million Syrian refugees are registered with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in Lebanon, while the Lebanese government estimated the true number of Syrians in the country at 1.5 million. Lebanese President Michel Aoun has been working hard with the international community to secure the return of Syrian refugees to their homeland due to the negative impact of their stay in Lebanon on the national economy. The president has previously announced that around 390,000 Syrian refugees have so far returned to Syria.

Trump enters war of words between Macron, Erdogan

During NATO meeting in UK, US president says French counterpart's comment that alliance is 'brain dead' was insulting.

Macron made the comment in a November 7 interview with The Economist, as he criticised a lack of coordination between NATO members over Turkey's recent operation in Syria. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan later responded, challenging Macron to check his own "brain death".

Trump also said he would not allow France to take advantage of American companies after a US government investigation found France's new digital services tax would harm US technology companies.

"In case of new American sanctions, the European Union would be ready to retaliate," Le Maire told Radio Classique.

Turkey threatens to block NATO's Baltic defence plan over YPG

President Erdogan calls for unconditional support from the alliance in its fight against the Kurdish-Syrian militia.

Turkey will block NATO's plan for the defence of Baltic countries unless the alliance recognises a Kurdish  group as "terrorists", Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan warned.

Relations between Turkey and its NATO allies have been strained over a host of issues, ranging from Ankara's decision to procure Russian air defence systems to its policy on Syria.

Several NATO members also condemned Turkey's decision to launch an offensive into northeastern Syria against the YPG group.

In an interview published on Tuesday, Secretary-General Stoltenberg said the alliance will respond to any attack on Poland or the Baltic countries.

Failed Israeli undercover mission in Gaza Strip in November 2018 attempted to infiltrate Hamas's communications.

Eight undercover Israeli agents - who were disguised as Palestinians and had taken the aliases of a real family in Gaza - entered the coastal enclave on November 11 last year with the objective of planting listening devices on Hamas's private communications system, an investigation by Al Jazeera Arabic's Ma Khafia Aazam (Tip of the Iceberg) programme revealed.

Aired on Sunday, the programme revealed the undercover Israeli operatives to be part of the Sayeret Matkal unit, which was established in 1957 to amass intelligence behind enemy lines.

Investigations by Hamas found the Israeli unit used spyware and drilling equipment that entered Gaza under the cover of an international humanitarian organisation called Humedica.

The botched operation resulted in the deadliest escalation since the 2014 war on the coastal enclave by Israel. In total, seven Palestinians were killed during the same evening of the undercover Israeli raid.
