White House Reviews Military Plans Against Iran, in Echoes of Iraq War

WASHINGTON — At a meeting of President Trump's top national security aides last Thursday, Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan presented an updated military plan that envisions sending as many as 120,000 troops to the Middle East should Iran attack American forces or accelerate work on nuclear weapons, administration officials said.

The revisions were ordered by hard-liners led by John R. Bolton, Mr. Trump's national security adviser. They do not call for a land invasion of Iran, which would require vastly more troops, officials said.

The development reflects the influence of Mr. Bolton, one of the administration's most virulent Iran hawks, whose push for confrontation with Tehran was ignored more than a decade ago by President George W. Bush.

North Korea Demands Return of Cargo Ship Seized by U.S.

SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea on Tuesday demanded the release of a ship impounded by the United States for evading international sanctions, calling the seizure a "flagrant act of robbery" that violated the spirit of the agreement reached last year between the North's leader, Kim Jong-un, and President Trump.

American prosecutors say the North Korean ship, the Wise Honest, was used to export coal and import heavy machinery in violation of sanctions imposed on the North over its nuclear arms program. The ship was detained in Indonesian waters by the authorities there in April of last year, and its seizure by the United States was announced last week. The ship has since been taken to American Samoa.

Nuclear Arms, Iran and Venezuela: Pompeo's Likely Agenda With Putin in Russia

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo made his first diplomatic trip to Russia on Tuesday to meet with his counterpart, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, and President Vladimir V. Putin.

The three have a great deal of territory to cover, from many bubbling international conflicts — where Washington and Moscow have often found themselves on opposite sides — to a potential new arms treaty. It is the highest level meeting between American and Russian officials since President Trump met with Mr. Putin in Finland last July.

As the meeting with Mr. Lavrov began, Mr. Pompeo said the discussions were intended to improve ties between the two nations, to "stabilize the relationship," and to find issues where the two powers had "overlapping interests."

Saudi Arabia Says Drones Hit Oil Pipeline, After Reports of Tanker Attacks

BEIRUT, Lebanon — A Saudi oil pipeline was attacked by drones, causing "limited damage," the Saudi energy minister said on Tuesday, a day after Saudi Arabia said two of its oil tankers had been damaged in an act of sabotage, ratcheting up tensions in the region.

The announcement came shortly after Iranian-aligned Houthi rebels in Yemen claimed, in a report on a TV station run by the Houthis, to have carried out an attack with seven drones that "targeted vital Saudi facilities." The station, Al-Masirah, did not specify which targets had been struck or when, leaving it unclear whether it was describing the same attack as the Saudis.

For Artemis Mission to Moon, NASA Seeks to Add Billions to Budget

NASA officials on Monday evening unveiled an updated budget request to Congress, seeking more than $1 billion in additional funding in what they called a down payment to accelerate the return of astronauts to the moon by 2024.

Jim Bridenstine, NASA's administrator, also said that the mission back to the moon would be called Artemis. In Greek mythology, Artemis is the twin sister of Apollo, whose name was used by NASA for the series of spacecraft that first landed Americans on the moon in 1969.

But the revision is just a request, and Congress must decide whether to back the Trump administration's plan to race back to the lunar surface.

Pompeo to meet Putin in Russia amid fears over US-Iran clash

The US secretary of state’s visit on Tuesday will be the first meeting between senior officials from the two countries since the release of Robert Mueller’s redacted report on his investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and alleged collusion with the Trump campaign.

Sergei Lavrov, Russia’s foreign minister, called the talks an attempt to stabilise a bilateral relationship battered by the special counsel’s investigation and growing tensions in Venezuela and Iran, where Moscow backs leaders opposed by Washington.

Global markets fall as China hits back at US with new import tariffs

World markets plunged further on Tuesday following heavy losses on Wall Street after China delivered a swift rebuff to Donald Trump by imposing retaliatory tariffs on $60bn of US imports.

Beijing ignored warnings from Trump about the dangers of escalating the trade conflict and sent tremors through global markets by announcing a new 25% import duty on a range of US products.

Strait of Hormuz, Gulf of Tonkin? Trump warns Iran it will 'suffer greatly' if it does 'anything'

Blame for the "sabotage operations" that damaged four oil tankers off the coast of the UAE has been placed at the feet of "Iran or Iran-backed proxies," courtesy of anonymous "US officials" breathlessly quoted by MSM.

With meters-wide holes in the side of each ship, there were no injuries or deaths – not even a drop of precious oil leaked from the tanker vessels "sabotaged" in the Persian Gulf. The nature of the "attack" dovetails with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's overly broad criteria for a "swift and decisive response." An attack by Iran "or its proxies" on "US interests or citizens" was all it would take to bring the wrath of Uncle Sam crashing down on Tehran, and here, as if on cue, Iran (or its proxies!) supposedly has blown a hole into the side of a ship destined to bring oil to the US. If Iran were so rash as to risk such a conflict, they would probably seek to do some real damage. But such seemingly suicidal acts are a dime a dozen in the run-up to US wars.

US wants India to swap Russian S-400s for THAAD & Patriots, but will it take the bait?

The US has long vowed sanctions if India buys the S-400 from Russia, but now it is offering its THAAD and Patriot missiles as an alternative. But the sticks-and-carrots game won't help the US get its way, an analyst told RT.

Washington has pitched Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) and Patriot Advanced Capability (PAC-3) missile defense systems to India last month. Other details of the generous offer are shrouded in mystery, but it obviously comes to outweigh the $5 billion deal India has signed with Russia to acquire the S-400 air defense systems. Simultaneously, the US seemed to have reeled back its threat of sanctions, choosing to go soft with India this time. This tactic looks particularly interesting when compared to the enormous pressure Washington is piling on Turkey, another future operator of the cutting-edge S-400.

Welcome to coup university: A Pentagon scholar's guide to overthrowing governments

With the Venezuela crisis making regime change once again the talk of the town in Washington, the US Special Operations Command has published a paper chronicling the highs and lows of seven decades of foreign interference.

The 250-page study, entitled "Support to Resistance: Strategic Purpose and Effectiveness," was penned by Army Special Forces veteran Will Irwin, and published by the Joint Special Operations University, where Irwin is a resident senior fellow.

Few nations have universities dedicated to the art of the coup, but few nations have a history of foreign intervention quite like the US. Since the end of World War II, the United States has brought its military might to bear on dozens of countries and sponsored scores of insurgencies and regime change operations worldwide. Irwin was first faced with the task of whittling down the list to something manageable.

Pompeo says Trump wants to improve Russia relations as talks with Lavrov begin in Sochi

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov have sat down to talks in Sochi, Russia. Although both officials welcomed the chance to thaw Russia-US relations, they have much to discuss first.

Speaking before the meeting on Tuesday, Lavrov stated that "it is time to build a new, more constructive and responsible"relationship between Washington and Moscow. "It's not destiny that we're adversaries on every issue," Pompeo added, touting the cooperation between both nations on counterterrorism issues.

"I'm here today because President [Donald] Trump is committed to improving this relationship," Pompeo said. "I hope that we can find places where we have a set of overlapping interests, and can truly begin to build out strong relationships."

US police raid Venezuelan embassy to evict pro-Maduro activists defending it from 'illegal seizure'

Pro-Maduro activists occupying the Venezuelan embassy in Washington have refused to vacate the premises in defiance of a notice threatening them with arrest and police entering the building but stopping short of evicting everyone.

"We are expecting the police to come in and violate the Vienna convention with their fictional government, nongovernment claiming that we should leave," the Embassy Civilian Protection Collective said in a video message shortly before the police arrived at the doors of the diplomatic premises to the cheers of the pro-Guaido camp outside. Despite their resolve to defend the diplomatic mission from "illegal seizure" by Guaido-appointed US representative Carlos Vecchio, many of the activists have left the embassy – apparently tired of the siege and worried about the threat of arrest – after a notice, which was not signed by any US government agency, urged them to "depart immediately" from the building in which they have lived for the last 34 days.

US military probes oil tanker 'sabotage attacks' off UAE coast

Iran's Zarif says his country anticipated 'activities to escalate tension' by hardliners in the US and the Middle East.

The US military is investigating the alleged sabotage attacks on four oil tankers off the coast of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), a US official has confirmed to Al Jazeera.

The move comes as Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Zarif said his country had anticipated an event that would escalate tension in the region.

The incident happened 140 kilometres south of the Strait of Hormuz, where about a third of all oil traded by sea passes through.

Saudi Arabia says oil stations attacked by armed drones

Two Aramco oil pump stations targeted; Houthi-run media said the group launched drone attacks on Saudi installations.

The attack on the pumping stations took place early on Tuesday, causing minor damage to one of the stations supplying a pipeline running from its oil-rich Eastern Province to the Yanbu Port on the Red Sea, Energy Minister Khalid al-Falih said in a statement carried by the state-run Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

The fire that broke out was later brought under control but Aramco stopped pumping oil through the pipeline.

'Maximum restraint': Europe allies reject US escalation with Iran

EU leaders call for calm as Secretary of State Pompeo makes surprise Brussels visit to discuss alleged Iranian threat.

European diplomats urged the United States to exercise "maximum restraint" as tensions mount in the Gulf a year after Washington withdrew from a landmark deal that curbed Iran's nuclear programme.

Mogherini said the EU continues to fully support the accord, which imposed limits on Iran's nuclear programme in return for sanctions relief.

Separately on Monday, Mogherini chaired a meeting of the so-called "E3" - the UK, France and Germany - to discuss efforts to keep the nuclear deal going, including a special trade mechanism called INSTEX the trio set up to try to enable legitimate trade with Iran to continue without falling foul of US sanctions.
