Iran announces partial withdrawal from nuclear deal

Iran has announced its partial withdrawal from the nuclear deal signed with world powers in 2015, a year after Donald Trump pulled out of the agreement.

President Hassan Rouhani said Tehran will stop exporting enriched uranium stocks as stipulated by the 2015 agreement and warned it would resume higher uranium enrichment in 60 days if the remaining signatories did not make good on promises to shield its oil and banking sectors from sanctions.

Mike Pompeo visits Iraq amid rising tensions with Iran

The US secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, cancelled a long-established plan to hold talks with the German chancellor, Angela Merkel, in Berlin on Tuesday, and instead travelled to Iraq to show US support for the Iraqi government during rising tensions with Iran.

The unusual last-minute schedule change follows brief talks between Pompeo and the Russian foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, on the sidelines of an Arctic Council meeting in Finland on Monday.

241m Europeans 'may have received Russian-linked disinformation'

Evidence of 6,700 so-called “bad actors” posting enough content to reach up to 241 million users was discovered by researchers examining the scale of the threat.

The report’s authors found specific evidence of malign actors seeking to shape specific news developments in Europe, including the debate over whether the Commons should back Theresa May’s Brexit deal during which divisive content was actively spread.

The disinformation was pushed via automated bots programmed to pick up specific text cues and by humans sometimes using software to communicate through multiple accounts at the same time and potentially avoiding bot detection algorithms.

World reacts to Iran's decision to abandon parts of nuclear deal

China, Russia and Israel among first countries to react to Tehran's decision to lift cap on uranium enrichment.

Iran has announced it will resume high-level enrichment of uranium if world powers do not keep their promises under a 2015 nuclear agreement.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov says the situation surrounding the fate of the 2015 Iran nuclear accord has been complicated by "irresponsible behaviour" of Washington.

China called on all parties to uphold the Iranian nuclear accord after Tehran said it would end curbs on its uranium enrichment stockpile unless other powers helped it bypass renewed US sanctions.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed not to allow Iran to acquire nuclear arms after Tehran’s announcement.

The European Union is in an "assessment phase" after Rouhani informed the other parties to the 2015 nuclear deal that Iran will partially pull out of the agreement, a senior EU official said on condition of anonymity.

Afghanistan: Taliban attacks Counterpart International in Kabul

Security officials say the attack targeted the office of the non-profit organisation in the Shahr-e-Naw area.

Nusrat Rahimi, spokesperson for the Ministry of Interior Affairs, said the target of the attack was Counterpart International, an NGO headquartered in the United States that has been operating in Afghanistan since 2005.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said the group attacked the NGO because it was involved in "harmful Western activities" inside Afghanistan. He did not elaborate what those activities were.

Meamwhile, representatives of the US and Taliban continue their negotiations in Qatar aimed at bringing an end to the nearly 18-year-long conflict.

Mexican drug cartels, poppy farmers and the US fentanyl crisis

How Mexico's drug cartels are feeding the US opioid crisis, and putting the country's poppy farmers out of business.

John Holman.— Until about two years ago, drug cartels would have relied on poppy gum mixed with chemicals to make heroin. But now, poppies play a lesser role, if one at all, in making synthetic heroin and other drugs sent to the US. Instead, drug cartels are turning to fentanyl.

According to the US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), fentanyl, a synthetic opioid, is 50 times more potent than heroin. Opioids were responsible for the majority of the US's 72,000 overdose deaths in 2017. China and Mexico are the two major sources of fentanyl, which US President Donald Trump has called a "horror drug".

While the US administration put pressure on China to try and stop the drug from entering the states, criminal organisations - including the Jalisco Nueva Generacion and the Sinaloa Cartel -south of the border are grabbing hold of a large part of the fentanyl trafficking market, and in turn, pushing traditional poppy farmers out business.

Iran stops selling excess uranium, will enrich to higher level in 60 days unless Europe acts

Iran’s President Rouhani announced a gradual scale-down of the country’s commitments under the 2015 nuclear deal in periods of 60 days, starting with a refusal to dispose of excessive heavy water and enriched uranium. On Wednesday, President Hassan Rouhani announced on national television that Iran will be suspending some of its commitments under the deal, which is also called Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), due to continued US violation and a failure of European signatories to compensate for the damage done by Washington.

The deal signed with Iran by leading world powers and the EU, offered Tehran a relief of sanctions in exchange for voluntarily restrictions of its nuclear industry. Last year the US broke its commitments under the deal and has been seeking to cripple Iran’s economy with economic sanction. Iran nevertheless remained faithful to its commitments as other signatories pledged to keep the deal alive by withstanding to US pressure.

US deploys ‘4 B-52 bombers’ in Middle East to counter purported Iran ‘attack plan’

The Pentagon will reportedly station four B-52 heavy bombers in the Middle East in response to what the White House called a “credible” Iranian attack plan on Americans or US allies in the region.

Two of the warplanes will leave the Barksdale Air Force base in Louisiana for Qatar on Tuesday, where the other two will join them some time in the coming weeks, unnamed Pentagon sources told CBS. They will be stationed at the US Central Command’s headquarters at the al-Udeid Air Base near Doha.

The move comes after the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group set sail for the Persian Gulf on Monday. White House National Security Advisor John Bolton announced both deployments over the weekend, claiming they are a response to “a number of troubling and escalatory indications and warnings” related to an Iranian attack.
