Trump again threatens to cut China ties after US official ruled it out

Scott Morrison disclosed the far-reaching attacks at a media conference in Canberra on Friday, while his defence minister declared that malicious cyber activity was “increasing in frequency, scale, in sophistication and in its impact”.

The government is not saying which country it believes to be responsible, except to say it is “a state-based actor, with very significant capabilities”.

The prime minister declined to respond to a specific question about whether it was China, after months of tensions in its relationship with Australia, but security experts later said they believed it, Russia and North Korea were the only countries that fell within Morrison’s description.

Efforts to derail MPIA inconsistent with WTO principles: MOFCOM

The persistent efforts by certain member countries to derail the Multi-Party Interim Appeal Arbitration Arrangement (MPIA) at the WTO are not supported by WTO rules and are detrimental for the multilateral trade system, China's Ministry of Commerce said on Thursday

HK people must understand they’ve become a pawn: Mahbubani

Global Times reporters Yu Jincui and Bai Yunyi solicited the insights of Kishore Mahbubani, distinguished fellow at the Asia Research Institute, National University of Singapore

the Washington expected that "US power and hegemony could readily mold China to United States' liking." In short, the US expected China to become like the US, a liberal democracy. The US is disappointed that this expectation (even if misplaced) didn't happen. In addition, the Western psyche has long had a fear of the "yellow peril." As a result of such structural forces, there is bipartisan support in the US for the current US policy of launching a contest against China.

This US-China geopolitical contest will continue after November, regardless of who wins. Nonetheless, there is also no doubt that a Biden administration (if it emerges) will be more courteous toward China. The public insults will cease. Despite this, the US could also become a formidable competitor for China under Biden as his administration will be able to rally more effectively the friends and allies of the US, like the Europeans, who have become disenchanted with the Trump administration.

. The world should encourage the European Union to provide leadership in revitalizing multilateral institutions. They could help to stabilize a world disrupted by the US-China geopolitical contest.

The US needs to develop a new consensus on rebuilding key government institutions to take care of the significant socio-economic problems that the US has built up.

As a result many of the developing economies in the rest of Asia, Africa and Latin America will be drawn to integrate their economies more closely with East Asia.

Uygur bill by the US merely a crafted semantic game: think tank report

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday signed the Uyghur Human Rights Policy Act, which accuses China of “human rights violations” in its Xinjiang region. Different institutes and experts in China, including those from the Xinjiang region, as well as residents of Xinjiang have condemned the US interference in China’s domestic affairs.

People need to be warned that the US government is good at using linguistic strategies to bring China's Xinjiang issues to a perceived state of historical nihilism. It can be said that the introduction of the Uyghur Human Rights Policy Act in the United States is more like a carefully crafted semantic game, according to the report.

US sees over 400 attacks on press freedom in under a month – but why?

Those incidents include arrests by police, assaults by police and protesters, the targeting of protesters with projectiles, stealing of equipment and a range of different attacks which we are documenting and making available on the  US Press Freedom Tracker website .

I wouldn't say so much they're weak and so it's easier to attack them. I think it's more about the lack of trust in the media, the lack of knowing anyone in the media.

And now we see, wrapped up in the coronavirus, people and the public are giving them a greater pass to crack down and control information when it's framed as about health. Then you top this with the images of police brutality against journalists, not to mention the protesters they were covering. It is really a dangerous combination of the decline in leadership and the fact is there's no one else waiting in the wings to pick up this mantle. So journalists are in grave danger around the world because of this.
