Japan accuses China of pushing territorial claims during pandemic

Japan's annual defence review has accused China of pushing its territorial claims under the cover of the coronavirus pandemic and claims Beijing is spreading propaganda and disinformation as it provides medical aid to nations fighting COVID-19.

China "is continuing to attempt to alter the status quo in the East China Sea and the South China Sea," Japan said in the defence white paper approved by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's government on Tuesday.

Strategy to suppress China is turning US into a loner

Washington has adopted a strategy to comprehensively suppress China since President Donald Trump took office in 2017. In addition to the trade war and a crackdown on China's technological companies, the US has also warned federal pension funds against investing in Chinese companies.

Eli Lake in his Bloomberg View column Thursday claimed that, "The US is trying to turn China into the next Iran."

The US is trying its utmost to tie its allies into Washington's chariot. In many cases, it is coercing allies to obey its will.

Instead of turning China into the next Iran, the US is turning itself into a loner.

Does Washington want a showdown in South China Sea?

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's Monday announcement of the US' formal rejection of China's claims in the South China Sea means that Washington is no longer pretending to remain neutral on territorial disputes in the waters. It signals the US has decided to take a clear-cut position and it wants a showdown with Beijing on the issue.

The US may also incite claimant countries to file lawsuits against China - just like how the Philippines raised the South China Sea arbitration matter. It is even possible for Washington to sell more advanced patrol vessels, fighter jets and naval surveillance equipment to boost the countries' strength, and encourage them to besiege China in multilateral occasions, such as ASEAN summits and the East Asia Summit.

If the US launches military exercises in the waters, be it without arms or live-fire drills, it can expect the very same scale in return. The similar type of military exercises can be carried out by China to match it. If the US warships come within 12 nautical miles of Chinese soil in the name of freedom of navigation, China will not only issue warnings and send the Chinese navy to intercept them, but can also consider deploying more anti-ship weapons. If US fighter jets keep buzzing over the region, more air-defense missiles could be deployed. If the US carries out joint maritime drills with regional countries, so will China.

US hits new low with political strike against Chinese businesses

White House trade advisor Peter Navarro briefed the media on Sunday, asserting that US President Donald Trump will take "strong actions" against TikTok and other Chinese-owned social media apps.

Navarro slung mud at Chinese social media apps, accusing them of engaging in "information warfare" against the US - which is another type of political stigmatization of Chinese businesses.

Business model upgrade crucial for new jobs in H2

With continuously prudent efforts to contain the novel coronavirus and reboot the world's second-largest economy, China's economic growth in the second quarter, to be announced this week,  has seen increasingly favorable signs, and is expected to be a highlight in the world amid the pandemic.

The Chinese economy is at a crossroads, facing the choice of whether to seek a new, high-quality growth path or revisit its past growth ways. The real question lurking is how to introduce new technologies into traditional manufacturing and services so as to realize a business model upgrade that generate more jobs.

During the upgrading process to gear traditional services toward big data platforms or the Internet of Things, an abundance of new jobs to be created will meet the employment needs of many college graduates.

US arms control negotiating tactics aim at consolidating military superiority

Fu Cong, head of the Chinese Foreign Ministry's Department of Arms Control, said on July 8 that China would only be happy to participate in trilateral arms control negotiations with the US and Russia after the US cuts its nuclear arsenal to China's size. Despite this, the US did not give up and again invited China to talks on arms control on July 9. They distorted the message sent from the Chinese side by saying the US "welcomes China's commitment to engage in arms control negotiations… prudent next steps will need to include face-to-face meetings."

Why is the US persisting unreasonably? Perhaps the US' real intention is not getting China in the talks — but getting the US out of them.

The US has already withdrawn from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF). It announced to withdraw from the 1992 Open Skies Treaty. It decided to drop out of the Arms Trade Treaty, a 2013 pact that regulates the international trade of conventional arms. The New START treaty, set to expire in February 2021, will likely become the next deal the US turns its back on.

To avoid being labeled as "killer of arms control deals," the US has tried hard to launch a war of words, confusing right and wrong, provoking ideological confrontation, and shaping a united front against China and Russia.
