Meat processing companies are reluctant to disclose detailed case counts.
As dozens of plants that closed because of outbreaks begin reopening, meat companies’ reluctance to disclose detailed case counts makes it difficult to determine whether the contagion is contained or new cases are emerging even with new safety measures in place.
Stock markets rally, as states ease restrictions and the New York Stock Exchange’s trading floor reopens.
The S&P 500 rose more than 2 percent in early trading, with shares of companies most likely to benefit from the lifting of restrictions on travel and commerce faring well. Shares of Delta Air Lines, United Airlines and other big carriers rose, as did Marriott International. Oil prices, which have been climbing all month, continued their rebound as the restarting of factories and resumption of travel has raised expectations that demand will rise.

Global report: 'disaster' looms for millions of children as WHO warns of second peak
Millions of children would fall into extreme poverty because of the outbreak, which has left governments short of money for health and education for the young, Dutch NGO KidsRights said.

Jair Bolsonaro under pressure over Trump's travel ban on Brazil
The US announced the measure on Sunday as the number of recorded cases in Brazil rose to more than 363,000 and the death toll to nearly 23,000.
Only the US now has more confirmed infections than Brazil where Bolsonaro has faced severe criticism for flouting social distancing guidelines and losing two health ministers in less than a month.
The White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany said the move would help ensure foreign nationals who had been in Brazil did not become “a source of additional infections in our country”. The indefinite ban, which comes into force on Friday, will apply to all non-US citizens who have been in Brazil within the last 14 days.

8,000 'excess deaths' in Mexico City as coronavirus rages: study
Mexico's capital registered 8,072 more deaths in the first five months this year than the average from the same period over the previous four years, an analysis by independent researchers showed on Monday, suggesting a possible surge in fatalities to the coronavirus pandemic.
Health officials have reported 1,655 deaths from the virus in Mexico City, out of 7,394 deaths nationwide. They have also acknowledged that the true death toll is higher, but difficult to estimate because of the low testing rate.

Why breaking globalization is easier said than done
Globalized supply chains have accelerated growth over the past decades but are proving fragile in the current pandemic. As companies assess the new risks emerging from globalization, safe supply is moving center stage.
Current attempts by companies in Germany and elsewhere to diversify their upstream supplies have been tentative at best so far. It's not at all clear if many of them will really trade the cost advantage of globalized supply chains for more security after the virus crisis is over.
What could support the fledgling trend though are innovative technologies aiming to put future supply-risk assessment on a more scientific footing.

GLOBAL TIMES
Washington's attack on Huawei set to prolong US economic recession
Beijing has openly said that it will use all necessary means to safeguard the high-tech Chinese firm's rights and interests. Reliable sources told the Global Times that authorities are set to make strong counterattacks against some top US companies, placing them on a trade blacklist and restricting or stopping their sales in China.
China will, according to a report, invest an estimated $1.4 trillion over six years until 2025 in high technologies including high-speed internet, industrial robotics, artificial intelligence, quantum computing as well as modern weaponry and defense systems.
Although the US is trying to contain China's technology advances, a flotilla of Chinese companies, including Huawei, Alibaba and Tencent, could join in hands with counterparts in Europe and Asia to explore new realms of science and technology. As China's huge market continues to grow and open to them, they could collectively reap the economic benefits of their innovations.

US’ sanction threat over China no bigger than bluffing
Canceling Hong Kong's separate customs territory status seems to be the biggest card that the US has. But actually, it's nothing but bluffing. Hong Kong's status as a separate customs territory is recognized by the World Trade Organization (WTO) and established by China's law rather than granted by the US. It has maintained this status after China became a member of the organization in 2001. The status is not granted by the US. Washington's unilateral threat will actually violate WTO rules.
Calling off Hong Kong's separate customs territory status will be Washington's last resort to intervening in Hong Kong affairs. If it were implemented, the US will have no other anchor to suppress China with affairs related to Hong Kong.

World trade, from bad to worse?
This is just another symptom of something else: the falling apart of the current liberal international order (LIO) set up after World War II with pillars such as the United Nations (UN), the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. It was also inspired by the principles of free trade, first championed by the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade and later the WTO.
Today, the irony is that the very countries that once championed free trade and the international arrangements that make free trade possible are closing up borders and raising obstacles to the free flow of goods and services. The last best champions of free trade can now be found in the Global South, rather than in an increasingly protectionist, isolationist and inward-looking North.

Desbloqueados
