Bloomberg Says 2020 Rivals Criticizing His Fortune Could Have Made Their Own

Michael R. Bloomberg on Friday brushed back critiques about his wealth and bristled at the suggestion that he was using it to buy success in the 2020 presidential race, arguing that other Democrats who have complained about his entry into their party’s primary could have taken it upon themselves to earn their own personal fortunes, as he had done.

In an interview on “CBS This Morning,” Mr. Bloomberg’s first since he announced his presidential campaign, the billionaire and former mayor of New York City rejected the idea that he had an unfair advantage, saying that while other candidates asked donors for money to help their campaigns, he had made his money himself and then given most of it away.

The interview with Mr. Bloomberg, 77, covered a wide range of topics, including the candidate’s recent apology for having defended so called stop-and-frisk policing as mayor of New York. Asked about the timing of his about-face, Mr. Bloomberg asserted that “nobody asked me about it until I started running for president.”

Trump Is Pushing Protectionism. But Polls Show Americans Embracing Trade.

A big part of Donald J. Trump’s political identity has centered on his promises to shake up the United States’ role in the world and reject the free-trade agreements that he has called “a disaster” for American workers.

Mr. Trump made those ideals a major part of his presidential campaign in 2016, and he has remained committed to them since — as the events of the past week have shown. He publicly clashed with European leaders during a visit to London, going so far as to threaten a 100 percent tariff on some imports from France. He continues to push Congress to approve a deal that would replace the North American Free Trade Agreement.

And on Tuesday he announced that he may wait until after the 2020 election to negotiate a grand deal with China, signaling that debates over trade could loom over the presidential race. Trade is not a primary concern for most American voters: Of the seven topics CNN asked about in a recent poll, voters were least likely to cite trade as important for their decision in 2020. But Mr. Trump’s heterodox approach to diplomacy has become a constant source of headlines, and Americans’ views of his trade policy have become entwined with their anxiety about how he conducts himself abroad

General Strike in France Challenges Macron’s Latest Ambition for Change

PARIS — The streets of French cities were filled with anti-government demonstrators, tear gas and police officers on Thursday as Emmanuel Macron again faced what has become an emblem of his presidency: social unrest. This time it was a general strike over his plans to overhaul the country’s pension system.

Much of the country came to a halt as transport workers went on a strike that could last into next week. By some estimates nearly half a million took part nationwide in the demonstrations. Trains, subways and buses were canceled, many schools were closed, and thousands were forced to stay home from work across the country.

In Paris, smoke billowed from the Place de la République and the wide Boulevard de Magenta was packed shoulder-to-shoulder with unionists furious with Mr. Macron. In Rennes, protesters smashed store windows; in Nantes, the riot police pushed the crowds back with tear gas; in Lyon, scuffles broke out between the police and demonstrators.

No progress in shifting Turkey from Russian S-400 missile system: U.S. defense chief

WASHINGTON, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Secretary of Defense Mark Esper said Thursday there had been "no movement" with regard to getting Turkey to abandon the Russian S-400 missile system. "We are where we are, there is no movement at this point," Esper told Reuters in an interview, adding "where they are going with S-400s is the wrong direction."

The remarks were made after the Dec. 3-4 North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit held in London, where Esper took part in meetings with the Turkish side. During the summit, U.S. President Donald Trump said the two sides remained in talks on the issue, noting that prior to Ankara's decision to purchase the S-400 missile system, it was denied the opportunity to buy the U.S. Patriot missile system.

The S-400 missile system has been a major thorn in the U.S.-Turkey relationship after Turkey signed a 2.5 billion U.S. dollar agreement with Russia to purchase S-400 missile batteries in 2017, and began taking deliveries in July this year. In response, Washington removed Ankara from its F-35 fighter jet program, in which Turkey is a buyer and manufacturer, for fear that the Turkish move might enable Russia to obtain sensitive information on the aircraft.

Greece to expel Libyan ambassador over Turkey-Libya accord

Deal mapping out a sea boundary is 'blatant violation of international law', says Greek foreign minister.

The Libyan-Turkish agreement could complicate Ankara's disputes over offshore energy exploration in the Mediterranean with nations including Greece, which sees the move as infringing its sovereign rights.

Greece and Turkey are at odds over various decades-old issues ranging from mineral rights in the Aegean Sea to ethnically-split Cyprus.

From a legal perspective, Athens says Turkish and Libyan areas of sovereignty should not touch because Greece lies between them.

Greece has been briefing its allies in NATO, the EU and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), along with China, Russia and Israel, about the issue.

Greece has sent military enforcement to Crete Naval Base.

Europeans, Iran to clash at nuclear talks as deal nears collapse

Europeans will urge Iran to stop violating nuclear deal, but Tehran remains angered by sanctions imposed by Washington.

European powers will demand at talks on Friday that Iran stop violating their nuclear deal or risk renewed UN sanctions, but with Tehran angry over a lack of European protection from US sanctions, there appeared to be scant scope for compromise.

As the US-Iranian confrontation has unravelled the nuclear accord, the Europeans have been torn between trying to save it and responding to Iran's breaches, which have increasingly tested their patience.

The breaches have included exceeding the maximum amount of enriched uranium it is allowed under the deal and resuming enrichment at Fordow, a plant buried inside a mountain that Iran hid from UN nuclear non-proliferation inspectors until Western spies exposed it in 2009.

"The European parties to the deal should know that the clock is ticking for them. They try to keep Iran in the deal but then take no action against America's bullying and pressure," a senior Iranian official told Reuters news agency.

French workers extend strike over Macron's pension reforms

Workers argue that French president's proposed reforms would make them work longer for smaller pensions.

The main trade unions were to meet on Friday morning to decide the next course of action.

The outcome depends on who blinks first - the unions who risk losing public support if the disruption goes on for too long, or the president whose two-and-a-half years in office have been rocked by waves of social unrest.

Macron says the system is unfair and too costly and that the French will have to work longer, though he appears reluctant to simply raise the retirement age of 62.

Al Jazeera's Butler said: "No one actually knows what is in the government plans to reform the pension system, but the government has said that they will reveal the details [next week]."
