Iraq Prime Minister Says He Will Resign Amid Protests

BAGHDAD — Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi of Iraq announced on Friday that he would submit his resignation to Parliament, following weeks of nationwide antigovernment protests that have left hundreds dead.

The announcement prompted jubilant celebrations at the main protest site, Tahrir Square in Baghdad, the capital.

While Parliament is likely to accept his resignation, the timing is unclear. What is certain is that the resignation of Mr. Mahdi, 78, would lead Iraq into uncharted territory, as he would be the first prime minister to resign from office since the 2003 invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein.

The Impeachment News Industry Is Here to Help (Overwhelm You Even More)

Eighteen witnesses have testified in public and in private. The story seems to expand by the day, if not by the hour. A diverse cast of characters is fighting to shape the public’s understanding of what happened.

If it feels as if you’re drowning in impeachment news, analysis and spin, publishers have a product just for you. A few dozen of them, in fact. Podcasts and newsletters and at least one video series are dedicated to the topic, each promising safe harbor from the storm.

Many major news organizations offer impeachment newsletters, including CNN, PBS, The Washington Post and, of course, The New York Times. But there are also those created by less traditional news publishers, like the nonprofit Project on Government Oversight or Heather Cox Richardson, a professor of American history at Boston College who offers her take on Facebook and in a newsletter titled “Letters From an American.”

Espionage and Interference? Australia Grapples With Its China Relationship

A Chinese defector to Australia who detailed political interference by Beijing. A businessman found dead after telling the authorities about a Chinese plot to install him in Parliament. Suspicious men following critics of Beijing in major Australian cities.

For a country that just wants calm commerce with China — the propellant behind 28 years of steady growth — the revelations of the past week have delivered a jolt. Fears of Chinese interference once seemed to hover indistinctly over Australia. Now, Beijing’s political ambitions, and the espionage operations that further them, suddenly feel local, concrete and ever-present.

U.S. researchers find underwater telecom cables make superb seismic network

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- A new research shows fiber-optic cables that constitute a global undersea telecommunications network could one day help scientists study offshore earthquakes and the geologic structures hidden deep beneath the ocean surface, according to a release of the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley) on Thursday.

UC Berkeley said researchers from UC Berkeley, Berkeley Lab, Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute and Rice University, have turned 20 km of undersea fiber-optic cable into the equivalent of 10,000 seismic stations along the ocean floor and recorded a 3.5 magnitude quake and seismic scattering from underwater fault zones in a four-day experiment in Monterey Bay.

The ultimate goal of the researchers' efforts is to use the dense fiber-optic networks -- probably more than 10 million km in all both on land and under the sea around the world -- as sensitive measures to help monitor earthquakes in regions without expensive ground stations, Ajo-Franklin said.

Lebanese protest against refugees' naturalization in Lebanon

BEIRUT, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- A big number of Lebanese demonstrated on Friday to protest against the naturalization of Syrian and Palestinian refugees in Lebanon, the National News Agency reported.

The protesters, who demonstrated in front of the headquarters of the EU delegation in Lebanon, complained about the economic burden imposed by refugees in Lebanon which exacerbates the economic deterioration. They added that Lebanon has done its full duties towards refugees in the past years.

Meanwhile, the EU delegation in Lebanon announced that the EU does not aim at integrating refugees in the Lebanese society and it fully agrees with Lebanese officials about the temporary stay of refugees in the country. The EU also noted that Lebanon has been carrying a big burden since the eruption of the civil war in Syria.

According to he United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Lebanon hosts more than 1.5 million Syrians who fled their war-torn country since the rebellion against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad erupted in 2011, though many expect the real number much higher.

Taliban confirm informal talks with the US

A day after Donald Trump claimed Taliban talks resumed, the Afghan armed group says meetings had taken place in Doha.

The Taliban has confirmed a claim by US President Donald Trump that Washington has resumed informal talks with the Afghan armed group nearly two months after peace negotiations were abruptly suspended.

"Whether it's partial or global, the optimum one being a full ceasefire, but it's possible they could agree to more limited measures to reduce violence. They have to agree to start turning off the violence and they have to agree to a pathway to direct talks with the Afghan government," he said.

The Taliban have refused to negotiate formally with the Afghan government, but diplomatic efforts to foster dialogue continue.

Iraqi PM to resign after deadly anti-government protests

Adel Abdul Mahdi to submit official resignation to Iraq's parliament on Friday after top Shia leader calls for change.

Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi has said he will submit his resignation to the country's parliament after a day of intense bloodshed amid mass anti-government demonstrations.

Abdul Mahdi's decision, announced in a statement on Friday, came in response to a call for a change of leadership by Iraq's top Shia leader Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani.

Hundreds of people have been killed and thousands wounded since the demonstrations started amid a fierce response from security forces, who have used live ammunition, tear gas and stun grenades against those taking to the streets.

The protests, sparked by widespread anger over official corruption, mass unemployment and failing public services, have gripped Baghdad and several cities in Iraq's south.
