UK calls for UN access to Chinese detention camps in Xinjiang

The call from the Foreign Office was in response to the China cables, a leak of classified documents from within the Communist party which appear to provide the first official confirmation that the camps were designed by Beijing as brainwashing internment centres.

UN calls for push to cut greenhouse gas levels to avoid climate chaos

Carbon dioxide emissions in 2018, also accounting for deforestation, rose to more than 55 gigatonnes, and have risen on average by 1.5% a year for the past decade, according to the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) annual emissions gap report.

Global emissions must fall by 7.6% every year from now until 2030 to stay within the 1.5C ceiling on temperature rises that scientists say is necessary to avoid disastrous consequences. The only time in recent history when emissions have fallen in any country at a similar rate came during the collapse of the Soviet Union. During the financial crisis and recession, emissions in the US and Japan fell briefly by about 6% but soon rebounded.

Iran Guard chief warns US and allies not to 'cross red lines'

At pro-gov't rally after deadly protests over fuel prices, General Hossein Salami threatens to 'destroy Iran's enemies'.

Iran will destroy the United States and its allies if they cross Tehran's red lines, the head of the country's elite Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said in an address to a pro-government rally denouncing last week's violent protests over the rise in fuel prices.

Amnesty International said on Monday at least 146 demonstrators were killed across Iran since its leaders ordered security forces to stamp out the protests.

The Iranian authorities have warned the "rioters" of severe punishment if the unrest continued. Some politicians have called for the "execution" of the "ringleaders of the riots".

They said late last week that disturbances had ceased, although unverified videos posted on social media after restrictions on internet access were partially lifted suggested sporadic protests continued in parts of the country.

Second night of clashes in Lebanon amid anti-gov't protests

Hezbollah and Amal supporters reportedly attack demonstrators in Beirut and southern town of Tyre.

For the second consecutive day, security forces intervened in a bid to break up confrontations late on Monday between the groups' supporters and demonstrators protesting against Lebanon's political elite.

The violence is threatening to tip largely peaceful demonstrations directed at the country's government and its ruling officials in a more bloody direction.

Lebanon has faced five weeks of anti-government protests, fuelled by anger at corruption among the sectarian politicians who have governed the country for decades. Demonstrators want them all to leave office.

The consecutive nights of clashes have raised fears that some groups may turn to violence in an attempt to break up the protest movement, while displaying the political and sectarian divisions that protesters say they want to put an end to.

Dockworkers in Chile paralyse ports ahead of broader strike

The strike affects shipments of copper, Chile's top export, and other goods as protests over high inequality continue.

by Sandra Cuffe

Members of the Chilean Dockworkers Union began a 48-hour strike on Monday morning, paralysing operations at 24 ports up and down the country's 6,435km (4,000-mile) Pacific coastline. Education, health, transport, public sector and other labour unions are scheduled to strike on Tuesday.

In its strike declaration on Friday, the national dockworkers union emphasised its condemnation of crackdowns on protests by security forces.

Pinera announced on Sunday that his government would present a bill that would permit the deployment of the Chilean Armed Forces to safeguard key infrastructure and police stations without decreeing a state of emergency or other kind of so-called "state of exception". Such a decree would otherwise suspend constitutional rights and freedoms and hand control of public order to the military.
