Five Killed as Political Violence Keeps Grip on Bolivia

EL ALTO, Bolivia — At least five people were killed in clashes outside a major fuel depot in Bolivia that had been blockaded for days by supporters of the ousted president, Evo Morales, as the political violence that has rocked the country for weeks inched closer to its seat of power.

A New York Times reporter saw the bodies of five young men with gunshot wounds in a church in El Alto, a working-class city outside La Paz, the country’s de facto capital. Witnesses said the men died when a military unit guarding the Senkata gasoline plant opened fire on protesters who had surrounded it for over a week.

Bolivia’s armed forces said in a statement on Tuesday that violence had flared outside Senkata after the military temporarily broke the protesters’ siege in an effort to lead a convoy of gasoline trucks from the plant to La Paz. Protesters responded by storming the plant and breaching its walls with dynamite, before being repelled by soldiers.

Impeachment Hearing Live Updates: Gordon Sondland Ties Trump to Ukraine Pressure Campaign

Gordon D. Sondland, the Republican megadonor turned ambassador to the European Union, told the House Intelligence Committee on Wednesday that he and other advisers to President Trump pressured Ukraine to investigate Democrats “because the president directed us to do so.”

n much-anticipated testimony opening the fourth day of public impeachment hearings, Mr. Sondland said that he, Energy Secretary Rick Perry and Kurt D. Volker, the special envoy for Ukraine, were reluctant to work with Rudolph W. Giuliani, the president’s personal attorney, on the pressure campaign and agreed only at Mr. Trump’s insistence.

While Republican lawmakers have derided other officials who have testified in the impeachment hearings because they had only secondhand information and had not spoken with the president, Mr. Sondland had direct contact with Mr. Trump and cannot be easily dismissed as a hearsay witness. But in his written opening statement, Mr. Sondland gave away few details of any conversations with Mr. Trump.

Zimbabwe police use force to disperse opposition crowd

MDC supporters had gathered at party headquarters in Harare to listen to a speech by party leader Nelson Chamisa.

Hundreds of police officers on Wednesday blocked roads leading to the headquarters of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) in Harare but supporters continued to gather, singing and chanting before the arrival of party leader Nelson Chamisa, who was set to address them.

Political tension is rising in Zimbabwe, where the population is grappling with a severe economic crisis that has seen rolling power cuts lasting up to 18 hours a day and shortages of foreign currency, fuel and medicines.

Most public sector doctors have been on a strike over pay since September, which has paralysed government hospitals where the poor seek treatment. Other public sector workers are demanding US dollar-indexed salaries to protect them from soaring inflation.

'Horrific pattern': Amnesty says 106 killed in Iran protests

Rights group calls for end to 'brutal crackdown' on anti-government demonstrations, reporting 106 deaths in 21 cities.

Since Friday, Iran has been rocked by nationwide protests sparked by growing anger and frustration after authorities rolled out a petrol-rationing scheme and slashed subsidies in a move that sent prices soaring by 50 percent.

President Hassan Rouhani has promised the price increase will be used to fund new subsidies for poor families.

But the decision unleashed widespread anger among Iranians such as Maryam Kazemi, a 29-year-old accountant in the southern Tehran suburb of Khaniabad, who said the new cost of fuel was "putting pressure on ordinary people".
