Turkey deports suspected German and British ISIL members

Turkey begins to deport ISIL suspects, as western countries deliberate what to do with them and their families.

NATO allies of Turkey in Europe have been worried that Turkey's offensive last month into a Syrian border area could lead to ISIL suspects and their families escaping from prisons and camps run by Kurdish forces. Ankara has dismissed the concerns.

Turkish authorities said on Monday they had begun to send ISIL detainees back to their home countries, deporting a German and a US citizen.

Thousands of ISIL fighters were jailed in the Kurdish-controlled territory after the collapse of the ISIL "caliphate" in 2017, and tens of thousands of their relatives are kept in camps there.

Turkey has said it will send some detained fighters to Ireland, Denmark and France in the coming days.

Amid protests, Iraq's top Shia leader calls for new election law

Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani says fresh poll needed to end Iraq's deepening, deadly political crisis.

More than 300 people have been killed and thousands of others wounded since the protests erupted at the start of October, sparked by widespread anger over official corruption, mass unemployment and failing public services.

The demonstrations have gripped Baghdad and several cities in Iraq's south, posing the biggest challenge yet to the year-old government of Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi, who has moved to try and quell the unrest by pledging to reshuffle his cabinet and deliver a package of reforms.

Lebanon protesters incensed by Aoun's 'insulting' remarks

In televised interview, President Aoun told demonstrators to 'emigrate' if they see no decent people in Lebanon.

Demonstrators marched towards the Presidential Palace in Baabda, incensed by President Michel Aoun's assertion in a televised interview on Tuesday that if those demonstrating "see no decent people in this state, let them emigrate. They won't get into power".

As the country enters its second month of continuous demonstrations, banks remain closed after workers went on strike, fearing for their safety after several tellers were attacked by customers, angry at unofficial capital controls being imposed by individual banks.

Universities and schools remain closed until further notice, and petrol stations have begun to ration fuel or have closed, saying their reserves will run out within a week. Aoun warned the country is heading for "catastrophe", but in his third speech in as many weeks, offered no concrete solutions to protesters' gripes.

Pelosi accuses Trump of bribery as impeachment inquiry proceeds

House of Representatives Speaker Pelosi dismisses Trump's denials of wrongdoing as impeachment inquiry intensifies.

Democrats are looking into whether the Republican president abused his power by withholding $391m in US security aid to Ukraine as leverage to pressure Kyiv to conduct two investigations that would benefit him politically.

The inquiry threatens Trump's presidency even as he seeks re-election in November 2020. If the House approves articles of impeachment - formal charges - against Trump, the Senate would then hold a trial on whether to convict him and remove him from office. Republicans control the Senate and have shown little support for Trump's removal.

The focus of the inquiry is a July 25 phone call in which Trump asked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to investigate Democratic rival Joe Biden and the former vice president's son, Hunter, who had served as a board member for a Ukrainian energy company called Burisma.

Chile to hold referendum on new constitution

In a win for protesters, government agrees for vote to be held in April 2020 on replacing the Pinochet-era constitution.

However, it does not establish the state's responsibility to provide education and healthcare, two demands made by the millions of Chileans who have taken to the streets.

Legislators in Chile's National Congress agreed on Friday to hold the plebiscite in April 2020 after hours of negotiations between the governing coalition and opposition parties.

The referendum will ask voters whether the constitution should be replaced and if so, how a new charter should be drafted, Senate President Jaime Quintana said.
