Democrats Win Control in Virginia and Claim Narrow Victory in Kentucky Governor’s Race

Democrats won complete control of the Virginia government for the first time in a generation on Tuesday and claimed a narrow victory in the Kentucky governor’s race, as Republicans struggled in suburbs where President Trump is increasingly unpopular.

In capturing both chambers of the legislature in Virginia, Democrats have cleared the way for Gov. Ralph S. Northam, who was nearly driven from office earlier this year, to press for measures tightening access to guns and raising the minimum wage that have been stymied by legislative Republicans. In Kentucky, Gov. Matt Bevin, a deeply unpopular Republican, refused to concede the election to his Democratic challenger, Attorney General Andy Beshear. With 100 percent of the precincts counted, Mr. Beshear was ahead by 5,100 votes.

Mormon Family Massacre Stuns Mexico, Laying Bare Government’s Helplessness

MEXICO CITY — The women and their children were taking a drive along a familiar rural road in northern Mexico when the gunmen attacked, riddling the three-car convoy with bullets. One woman was shot at close range in the chest. One child was shot in the back. Several others — among them 6-month-old twins — were burned beyond recognition when one of the vehicles caught fire. When the shooting stopped, six children and three women were dead, all members of the LeBarón family, dual Mexican and American citizens who have lived for decades in a fundamentalist Mormon community near the border.

Many questions remained on Tuesday about what happened on that lonely stretch of road a day earlier, amid the rugged scrubland of the Mexican border state Sonora. But coming closely on the heels of two other prominent episodes of violence, the ambush horrified a nation reeling from a record-high number of murders. And it added to the pressure on Mexico’s president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, to fulfill the promise he made when he took office nearly a year ago: that he would curb the killings.

A Wife of al-Baghdadi Is Captured by Turkey, Erdogan Says

ISTANBUL — Turkey has captured one of the wives of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the slain leader of the Islamic State movement, in addition to several other family members, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in a speech on Wednesday. He also confirmed the capture of Mr. al-Baghdadi’s elder sister and brother-in-law in the town of Azaz, in a Turkish-controlled part of northern Syria, several days ago.

The Turkish leader, speaking at the Islamic Studies Faculty of Ankara University, took a swipe at the fanfare with which President Trump announced the death of Mr. al-Baghdadi last month. Mr. Trump proclaimed Mr. al-Baghdadi’s demise in a morning nationally televised address, at a time when American forces were withdrawing from the area.

Chilean president to unveil measures to support 6,800 SMEs affected by protests

SANTIAGO, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- Chilean President Sebastian Pinera said Tuesday that he will introduce measures intended to support some 6,800 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) affected by the vandalism in the last three weeks in the South American country. Pinera said he hoped that these affected SMEs will be paid in cash immediately "so as to help recover their working capital."

He had made arrangements with the financial sector to render more flexibility and possibilities for the businesses to reschedule credit, as well as to speed up insurance payouts to the SMEs that were looted or destroyed by violent demonstrators. Moreover, the affected businesses will be given more leeway and better terms in tax payment, as well as in getting subsidies, loans, legal advice, and information on access to benefits.

Russia to develop military might, push disarmament: Putin

MOSCOW, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin said here on Wednesday that Russia will develop its military while simultaneously promoting disarmament. Putin noted that Russia does not want to be and will not be dragged into a cost-intensive arms race, which would be destructive to the country. However, developing advanced weapons is necessary amid tensions with the United States, said the president.

"Our army and navy have proved their high readiness, and we intend to build up our defense potential and put on combat alert systems of hypersonic, laser and other modern weapons that other countries do not yet have," Putin said at a meeting of high-ranking officers and prosecutors. "This is not a reason to threaten anyone. On the contrary, we are ready to do everything in our power to push the disarmament process with our latest weapon systems, the task of which is solely to guarantee security, taking into account the growing threats we are facing," he added, according to an official transcript.

Lebanon protesters seek to shut down key state institutions

Lebanese stage sit-ins at ministries, banks and state-affiliated companies in a bid to force ruling elite to step down.

The move on Wednesday suggests a shift in the focus of protesters from blocking roads and setting up barricades to holding sit-ins at state-affiliated sites as they seek to maintain pressure on the political establishment until their demands for the departure of the ruling elite and an end to chronic economic mismanagement and corruption are met.

Besides the justice ministry, other protest points where large sit-ins are expected on Wednesday include the ministries of energy, foreign affairs, finance, tourism, communication and labour, as well as the offices of Electricite Du Liban, the main Lebanese electricity provider.

Other state-affiliated institutions include Zaitunay Bay, a controversial marine development at the heart of Beirut's central area and telecommunication operators.

Simultaneously, a march to "reclaim coastal public property" is also planned, according to Lara Bitar, a media worker and organiser.

Trump's Republican allies suffer defeat in state elections

Democrats take full control of the Virginia legislature and claim victory in an upset win in Kentucky.

US Democrats claimed an upset win in Kentucky on Tuesday over a Republican governor backed by President Donald Trump and seized control of the state legislature in Virginia, where anti-Trump sentiment in the suburbs remained a potent force.

The outcomes of Tuesday's elections in four states, including Mississippi and New Jersey, could offer clues to how next year's presidential election could unfold, when Trump will aim for a second four-year term.

Meanwhile, Trump appeared to accept defeat for the Republican governor, but said the election as a whole was a win.

Meanwhile, Democrats wrestled both chambers of Virginia's legislature from narrow Republican majorities, which would give the party complete control of the state government for the first time in a quarter-century.
