Heading to G-20, Trump Once Again Assails America’s Friends

OSAKA, Japan — President Trump, arriving in Japan on Thursday, opened his latest foreign trip much as he did his last one, lashing out at America’s allies, including his hosts, just before sitting down with them to talk through differences on issues like security and trade.

In the hours before and after leaving for an international summit meeting, Mr. Trump assailed Japan, Germany and India. He complained that under existing treaty provisions, if the United States were attacked, Japan would only “watch it on a Sony television.” He called Germany a security freeloader and chastised India for raising tariffs on American goods.

At G-20, Trump Seeks Fresh Start With Putin After End of Mueller Inquiry

OSAKA, Japan — The last time he was to meet with President Vladimir V. Putin, President Trump called it off at the last minute, citing Russia’s seizure of three Ukrainian ships and detention of two dozen Ukrainian sailors. They would meet, Mr. Trump declared, only after “this situation is resolved.”

Seven months later, the situation remains unresolved — and unmentioned. Even though the Ukrainian ships and sailors are still held by Russia, Mr. Trump has rescheduled his session with Mr. Putin for Friday in Osaka, Japan, where both leaders will attend the annual Group of 20 summit meeting and try to restart their relationship.

Europeans Race to Establish Trade With Iran

BRUSSELS — European signatories to the Iran nuclear deal are scrambling to get a barter-trade arrangement with Tehran up and running this week, in an effort to persuade Tehran not to breach limits on enrichment set out in the agreement.

Iran has threatened to break the limit on its stockpile of low-enrichment uranium as early as Thursday. But it is considered likely to hold off until after a meeting in Vienna on Friday with the remaining signatories: Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the European Union.

In Bahrain, Gaza Is Pitched as a ‘Hot I.P.O.’ Many Palestinians Aren’t Buying It.

MANAMA, Bahrain — Judged on its own terms, the White House-led conference on improving the lives of Palestinians, staged this week in Bahrain as the first step toward a long-promised American peace plan, was a smashing success.

It proved that the Israel-Palestinian conflict “actually is a solvable problem, economically,” Jared Kushner, the president’s son-in-law and senior adviser, declared proudly — though that proposition was never actually in doubt.

U.S. Versus China: A New Era of Great Power Competition, but Without Boundaries

WASHINGTON — When President Trump meets President Xi Jinping of China this week to discuss contentious trade issues, they will face each other in another nation that was once the United States’ main commercial rival, seen as a threat to American dominance.

But the competition between the United States and Japan, which hosts the Group of 20 summit this week for the first time, settled into a normal struggle among businesses after waves of American anxiety in the 1980s. Japan hit a decade of stagnation, and in 2010, China overtook it as the world’s second-largest economy.

White Powder, Red Faces: Cocaine Cargo Aboard Brazil Presidential Plane

RIO DE JANEIRO — President Jair Bolsonaro of Brazil has vowed to pursue drug traffickers relentlessly. So he was hard-pressed to explain how a presidential plane ended up carrying 86 pounds of cocaine across the Atlantic during an official trip.

A Brazilian airman on that aircraft was caught with the shipment on Tuesday during a brief stop in Spain en route to the Group of 20 summit in Japan, Brazilian and Spanish officials said Wednesday.

The cocaine bust was bad enough. But it was an extraordinary embarrassment for Mr. Bolsonaro, who has exalted the integrity and professionalism of Brazil’s military.

Iran has held back on its threat to make its first breach of the nuclear deal and may be waiting for the outcome of talks with EU powers, China and Russia in Vienna.

EU to run war games to prepare for Russian and Chinese cyber-attacks

The EU is to conduct war games to prepare for Russian and Chinese cyber-attacks, in response to a series of incidents that alarmed European governments.

Last week the EU’s leaders committed at a summit in Brussels to “a coordinated response to hybrid and cyber-threats” and asked the European commission and member states to “work on measures to enhance the resilience and improve the security culture” of the bloc.

Iran warns US against 'repeating mistake' of violating borders

Tehran will respond with even greater force to a second US incursion after drone shootdown, parliament speaker says.

On Wednesday, Trump said any war between Iran and the US would be swift, but reiterated his desire to avoid a military confrontation.

The US leader has been a frequent critic of Iran's leaders, accusing them of sowing disorder and unrest in the Middle East.

Tehran, meanwhile, has accused Trump's administration of "economic terrorism" and "psychological warfare" over Washington's application of punishing sanctions after Trump withdrew from an historic nuclear deal with world powers

Amid European efforts to salvage the deal, US officials also launched a diplomatic campaign to rally their allies in the face of the escalating crisis.

Maduro says he will be 'ruthless' if opposition attempts coup

President's warning comes after officials reportedly foiled a coup plot that included murdering the Venezuelan leader.

Earlier, Maduro's spokesman Jorge Rodriguez said on state television that a network of mostly retired police officers and soldiers planned to bomb a key government building, seize a Caracas airbase and loot Venezuela's central bank.

He also said the plotters wanted to edge opposition leader Juan Guaido out of Venezuela's political landscape.

Rodriguez said the purported network wanted to steal a helicopter to liberate Raul Baduel, a former defence minister now in jail and install him as president.
