Trump Accuses Iran in Explosions That Crippled Oil Tankers

WASHINGTON — President Trump said on Friday that there was no doubt that Iran was behind the explosions that crippled two oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman this week and warned Tehran not to try to close the Strait of Hormuz, a major transit point for international shipping.

Well, Iran did do it,” the president said in an interview on “Fox & Friends” in his first comments since the ships were damaged. “You know, they did it because you saw the boat. I guess one of the mines didn’t explode and it’s got essentially Iran written all over it.”

After Protests, Hong Kong's Leader Faces More Calls ti Delay Bill

HONG KONG — A top adviser and a pro-Beijing lawmaker added to pressure on Hong Kong’s embattled leader on Friday, saying publicly that an unpopular bill that would allow extraditions to mainland China should be delayed.

Bernard Chan, a member on a top body that advises the chief executive, Carrie Lam, said on Friday that it would be impossible to rush through the bill, with the city on edge after street clashes that saw the police fire tear gas and rubber bullets at protesters opposed to the legislation. And the lawmaker Michael Tien became the first member of the legislature’s pro-Beijing faction to openly call for a delay of the bill’s passage.

U.S. Special Forces Battle Against ISIS Turns to Containment, and Concern

DEH BALA, Afghanistan — Two years ago, Pentagon officials said that American forces in the remote reaches of Afghanistan could defeat the Islamic State’s offshoot here by the end of 2017.

This month, American Special Forces in eastern Afghanistan were still fighting, with no end in sight.

During a visit by a New York Times reporter to their dusty army outpost, in the eastern province of Nangarhar, the Americans pointed out the ridges and valleys at the foot of the snow-capped Spin Ghar mountains: There, they noted, was the start of the Islamic State’s territory, in some of the most forbidding terrain in Afghanistan.

US releases video it claims shows Iran removing mine from tanker

Iran denies US allegations of Revolutionary Guard involvement in suspected attacks on two ships in the Gulf of Oman.

"At 4:10pm local time [00:10 GMT] an IRGC Gashti Class patrol boat approached the M/T Kokuka Courageous and was observed and recorded removing the unexploded limpet mine from the M/T Kokuka Courageous," Navy Captain Bill Urban, a spokesman for the US military's Central Command, said in a statement late on Thursday.

The video release comes hours after Secretary of State Mike Pompeo blamed Iran for the incident, saying "these unprovoked attacks present a clear threat to international peace and security".

Iran Foreign Minister Javad Zarif hit back at Pompeo, saying on Thursday the US allegations against Iran were part of "sabotage diplomacy" adopted by a so-called B Team, which he has said includes US National Security Adviser John Bolton, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe had been visiting Iran in an attempt to ease tensions and was meeting with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei when the reported attacks occurred.
