Chinese and Iranian Hackers Renew Their Attacks on U.S. Companies

SAN FRANCISCO — Businesses and government agencies in the United States have been targeted in aggressive attacks by Iranian and Chinese hackers who security experts believe have been energized by President Trump’s withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal last year and his trade conflicts with China.

Recent Iranian attacks on American banks, businesses and government agencies have been more extensive than previously reported. Dozens of corporations and multiple United States agencies have been hit, according to seven people briefed on the episodes who were not authorized to discuss them publicly.

The attacks, attributed to Iran by analysts at the National Security Agency and the private security firm FireEye, prompted an emergency order by the Department of Homeland Security during the government shutdown last month.

The Iranian attacks coincide with a renewed Chinese offensive geared toward stealing trade and military secrets from American military contractors and technology companies, according to nine intelligence officials, private security researchers and lawyers familiar with the attacks who discussed them on the condition of anonymity because of confidentiality agreements.

Rift Between Trump and Europe Is Now Open and Angry

MUNICH — European leaders have long been alarmed that President Trump’s words and Twitter messages could undo a trans-Atlantic alliance that had grown stronger over seven decades. They had clung to the hope that those ties would bear up under the strain.

But in the last few days of a prestigious annual security conference in Munich, the rift between Europe and the Trump administration became open, angry and concrete, diplomats and analysts say.

A senior German official, who asked not to be identified because he was not authorized to speak on such matters, shrugged his shoulders and said: “No one any longer believes that Trump cares about the views or interests of the allies. It’s broken.”

The most immediate danger, diplomats and intelligence officials warned, is that the trans-Atlantic fissures now risk being exploited by Russia and China.

Kashmir Militants Strike Again, Killing at Least 4 Indian Soldiers in Pulwama

NEW DELHI — Militants in Kashmir struck again on Monday, killing an Indian Army major and at least three other soldiers just days after orchestrating a devastating bombing that killed dozens of Indian security forces.

Under the cover of darkness, a group of militants opened fire on an approaching army contingent, killing the major and three soldiers and critically wounding at least one other soldier in the Pulwama District of the Kashmir Valley, Indian security officials said.

Indian officials attributed the latest attack to Jaish-e-Mohammed, the violent separatist group that claimed responsibility for the bomb blast last week that was one of the deadliest attacks in Kashmir in decades.

Poland and Israel Try to Improve Ties, but History Intrudes

JERUSALEM — Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel, in the middle of a re-election campaign, seemed set to score back-to-back diplomatic triumphs in a span of just a few days, with Poland, of all countries, playing an important role in both.

This past week, Mr. Netanyahu attended a meeting in Warsaw, convened by the Trump administration, where five dozen nations discussed the common strategic threat posed by Iran.

Sunni Arab nations were also at the conference, and Mr. Netanyahu made the most of it, appearing behind closed doors alongside diplomats from Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Bahrain and later leaking a video in which Bahraini and Saudi officials could be heard echoing his frequent warnings that Iran is the Middle East’s greatest danger.

And in Jerusalem on Monday night, Mr. Netanyahu had planned to welcome the leaders of Poland and three other East European countries whose support he has cultivated as a way to push back against interference by what they all perceive, to varying degrees, to be another common adversary: the European Union.

Indian soldiers die in Kashmir gun battle as tensions escalate

Police said they were fired on by militants as they searched a village in Kashmir’s southern Pulwama district, close to where a car laden with explosives rammed a paramilitary convoy on Thursday. Two militants were also killed in the 12-hour gunfight that followed. Police were still searching the village on Monday afternoon.

Police said the identities and affiliations of the dead militants were still being ascertained, but Indian media have claimed they belonged to Jaish-e-Mohammed, the Islamist group involved in Thursday’s attack and may have had direct involvement.

Five more soldiers have died since Thursday’s attack, including in an improvised explosive device blast on Saturday near the ceasefire line between Indian- and Pakistani-controlled Kashmir. Both countries claim the region in full but rule separate sections divided by a heavily militarised border.

'I believe Putin': Trump dismissed US advice on North Korea threat, says McCabe

A former FBI acting director has alleged Donald Trump dismissed advice from his own security agencies on the threat posed by North Korea’s missiles, saying “I don’t care. I believe Putin.”

McCabe said Trump made the comments in a meeting about the weapons capability of North Korea. McCabe was not in the meeting with Trump and said his FBI colleague told him about it later.

Japan almost cancelled Brexit talks due to 'high-handed' letter – report

The Financial Times cited unnamed officials in Tokyo who reacted with dismay to a letter sent on 8 February in which Hunt, the foreign secretary, and Fox, the international trade secretary, insisted that “time is of the essence” in securing a trade deal with Japan, the world’s third-biggest economy.

Hunt and Fox also called for flexibility on both sides – an approach the paper said had been interpreted as criticism that Japan did not share their desire to quickly conclude a free trade agreement after Britain is scheduled to leave the European Union on 29 March.

Yemen's warring sides agree to pullback from Hodeidah: UN

Located on Yemen's western coast, Hodeidah provides access to Bab al-Mandeb, the fourth busiest waterway in the world.

The redeployment from Hodeidah is a critical part of a ceasefire deal reached in December in Sweden that calls on the government and Houthi rebels to move forces away from ports and parts of the city.

Under the vaguely worded agreement, three of Hodeidah's ports - Hodeidah, Saleef and Ras Isa - which serve as a major lifeline for more than 18 million Yemenis who live in the rebel-held territory, were expected to fall under the control of "local forces".

Donald Trump demands Europe take hundreds of ISIL fighters

US president says Britain, France, Germany and other allies must prosecute more than 800 ISIL prisoners in custody.

Europe must take in hundreds of ISIL fighters captured in Syria or else the United States may be forced to release them, US President Donald Trump warned.

Though ISIL members are believed to have gone underground as sleeper cells in Iraqi cities, their territorial rule is, for now, almost over.

Facebook blocks pages with MILLIONS of subscribers after CNN reports ties with RT

Facebook has suspended several accounts operated by Maffick Media without prior warning, right after CNN ran a report about the company’s perceived ties to the Kremlin.

In what seems to be a new step in the social media giant’s fight against perceived 'Russian propaganda', Facebook took down, without prior notice, several pages offering video content. The social media network said it would ask the administrators of Soapbox, Back Then and Waste-Ed to disclose their “Russian affiliations.”

ISIS-supporting group threatens US attacks with chilling photoshop of LA explosion

An Islamic State-supporting group shared a chilling photoshopped image to social media on Friday which appears to threaten a terrorist attack on a skyscraper in downtown Los Angeles.

In the foreground of the photoshopped picture, a camo-clad masked figure appears to be holding a furled Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) flag in one hand, while the explosion emanates from a high-rise behind them. They also appear to be wearing something akin to a suicide attack vest.

The SITE Intelligence Group, which tracks the social media and online activities of extremist groups, says that the image was shared to threaten attacks in the US “and the west.” The LAPD tweeted that although it takes the social media post seriously, “at this point we have not been able to find any credible threat against buildings in our city.” The police force urged city residents to “heighten their awareness” and report any suspicious activity to an anti-terrorism hotline.

No limits for 'Russian Tomahawks'? What we know about Moscow’s new nuclear cruise missile

Russia’s new nuclear cruise missile has entered the final stage of development following reports of successful tests. Officials say Burevestnik ('Storm Petrel') will have "unlimited" range and can outmaneuver any known defenses.

The missile’s nuclear power unit was successfully tested back in January, Russian media reported on Friday, citing sources. This "crucial" stage of testing "confirmed" that the reactor allows the missile to travel to an "unlimited range." The military didn’t officially confirm the story, and it is not clear where and when the test reportedly took place

The weapon’s ambitious concept was unveiled by President Vladimir Putin during his State of the Nation address last March. The 9M730 Burevestnik, known as SSC-X-9 Skyfall under its NATO reporting name, is designed as a nuclear-powered and nuclear-armed intercontinental cruise missile capable of traveling "unlimited distances." It is even able to circle around the globe for days, if required.

Soulless hunters: Should the West beware of new Russian heavyweight drones?

Russia is testing the heavy attack drone Okhotnik ('Hunter'), which is designed to dismantle an enemy’s defenses. It is scheduled to enter service this year along with some similar models. Can it challenge the West's UAV reign?

The new heavy stealth attack drone Okhotnik will have its first test flight in the "nearest future," Industry and Trade Minister Denis Manturov said on Friday. The military earlier announced that it would start receiving new state-of-the-art recon and attack UAVs this year.

With the Pentagon extensively utilizing drones like MQ-1 Predator to spot and strike targets in places like the Middle East and Afghanistan, Moscow now hopes to up its game in drone warfare.
