Now hiring for 'the worst job in government': Trump's chief of staff

The White House chief of staff is the president’s gatekeeper, controlling the flow of information and access to the Oval Office. In normal times, it is widely coveted. But when the president is Donald Trump and he is tweeting around the clock, it is seen as a poisoned chalice.

According to media reports the president is considering the Republican congressman Mark Meadows, former campaign adviser David Bossie, former New Jersey governor Chris Christie and the US trade representative, Robert Lighthizer. Other potential contenders, including the treasury secretary, Steven Mnuchin, and the White House budget director, Mick Mulvaney, are understood to have ruled themselves out.

UN chief attempts to revive flagging climate change talks

“We’re running out of time,” he told the plenary. “To waste this opportunity would compromise our last best chance to stop runaway climate change. It would not only be immoral, it would be suicidal.”

The talks have been centred on devising a rulebook for implementing the 2015 Paris agreement and raising countries’ level of ambition to counter climate change, but progress has been slow on several key issues and divisions have emerged between four fossil fuel powers – the US, Russia, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait – and the rest of the world.

Meng Wanzhou: Canadian court frees Huawei CFO on bail

The decision by the court in Vancouver on Tuesday came as Donald Trump told Reuters that he would intervene in the case if it would serve national security interests or help close a trade deal with China.

It also follows news that the former Canadian diplomat Michael Kovrig has been detained in China. Kovrig had previously served as political lead for prime minister Justin Trudeau’s 2016 visit to Hong Kong. Trudeau told reporters the government took news of the detention “very seriously”. Former diplomats and analysts had previously cautioned that China might take punitive measures in response to Meng’s arrest, which has prompted uproar in China.

Turkey expanding military operation in northern Syria: Erdogan

Turkey said an operation east of the Euphrates river in northern Syria will commence in the coming days.

The operation, announced on Wednesday, could further complicate already strained relations with the United States, which has troops stationed in the area currently controlled by Kurdish forces

In January, Turkey and the Free Syrian Army (FSA) - an Ankara-backed armed Syrian opposition group launched what it called Operation Euphrates Shield in the Afrin district in northern Syria in an attempt to remove the Kurdish fighters, who it claims are affiliated with the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).

As the Syrian war progressed, the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) umbrella organisation gained significant amounts of territory in eastern and northern Syria in its fight against ISIL.

Khashoggi murder: Trump says he stands by Saudi crown prince

  • US president refuses to condemn MBS despite CIA assessment that the crown prince ordered the killing of Khashoggi.

The US president has come under fierce criticism from fellow Republicans in the Senate over the issue, particularly after CIA Director Gina Haspel briefed them. Last month, the CIA assessed that MBS ordered the killing, which Trump called "very premature

  • Trump also said he hoped US senators would not propose stopping arms sales to the Saudis, deals he has doggedly fought to save ever since the gruesome details of Khashoggi’s murder were leaked by Turkey.

This week, the US Senate will consider a joint resolution condemning the crown prince for the killing, something that the president would have to sign or veto if passed by Congress. Trump has said he would meet senators.

The US president said he is more open to ending US support for the Saudi-led war in Yemen, something several US politicians have pushed for in recent weeks.
