U.S.-China Trade Truce Gives Both Sides Political Breathing Room

The agreement reached by President Trump and President Xi Jinping of China to effectively pause their trade war and work toward a pact appears to be aimed at giving the two leaders some political breathing room after an escalating fight has begun inflicting economic damage on both sides of the Pacific.

The temporary truce, forged over a working dinner on Saturday night in Buenos Aires, does little to resolve the deep differences between the two nations and is more a political agreement than a substantive one. Both sides immediately positioned the cease-fire as a domestic victory while staking out areas where they would not compromise.

‘Yellow Vests’ Riot in Paris, but Their Anger Is Rooted Deep in France

GUÉRET, France — At the bare bottom of Florian Dou’s shopping cart at the discount supermarket, there was a packet of $6 sausages and not much else. It was the end of last week, and the end of last month. At that point, “my salary and my wife’s have been gone for 10 days,” he lamented.

How to survive those days between when the money runs out and when his paycheck arrives for his work as a warehouse handler has become a monthly challenge. The same is true for so many others in Guéret, a grim provincial town in south-central France. And it has made Mr. Dou angry.

So he used what money he had left and drove 250 miles to join the fiery protests on Saturday in Paris, where the police moved in with tear gas, water cannon and rubber bullets.

Israeli Software Helped Saudis Spy on Khashoggi, Lawsuit Says

LONDON — A Saudi dissident close to the murdered journalist Jamal Khashoggi has filed a lawsuit charging that an Israeli software company helped the royal court take over his smartphone and spy on his communications with Mr. Khashoggi.

The lawsuit puts new pressure on the company, the NSO Group, and on the government of Israel, which licenses the company’s sales to foreign governments of its spyware, known as Pegasus. More broadly, the suit also calls new attention to Israel’s increasingly open alliance with Saudi Arabia and other Persian Gulf monarchies.

Saudi Arabia and its allies like the United Arab Emirates have never recognized the Jewish state but have quietly found common cause with it in opposition to Iran. Since the Arab Spring uprisings, Israel and those monarchies also appear to have found an alignment of interest in defending the established Arab order.

Qatar Says It Will Leave OPEC and Focus on Natural Gas

BEIRUT, Lebanon — The tiny, wealthy Persian Gulf state of Qatar will withdraw from OPEC in January, the country’s energy minister said on Monday.

The minister, Saad Sherida al-Kaabi, said the move would allow Qatar to focus on its gas industry and dismissed the idea that the withdrawal was connected to politics.

Qatar is one of the smallest producers in the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, but it is the world’s largest exporter of liquefied natural gas, giving its citizens the highest per capita income of any country.

In June 2017, Saudi Arabia and three other Arab nations imposed a travel and trade boycott on Qatar, accusing it of financing terrorism and interfering in the internal affairs of other states.

Israeli Police Urge Bribery and Fraud Charges Against Netanyahu. Again.

JERUSALEM — The Israeli police recommended Sunday that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu be indicted on bribery, fraud and other charges, accusing him of trading regulatory favors for fawning news coverage, in what is potentially the most damaging of a series of corruption cases against him.

It was the third time this year that the police have urged that Mr. Netanyahu face criminal prosecution. And it dealt another blow to his teetering governing coalition, which narrowly averted collapse last month and is clinging to a one-vote majority in Parliament while edging closer to calling early elections.

Mr. Netanyahu, who has dominated Israeli politics for a decade and continues to lead all potential challengers in opinion polls, must now await the decision of the attorney general, whom he appointed, on whether to indict him in all three cases. Depending on the decision, which could take months, he could be Israel’s first sitting prime minister to be indicted.

Portrait of a planet on the verge of climate catastrophe

As recent reports have made clear, the world may no longer be hovering at the edge of destruction but has probably staggered beyond a crucial point of no return. Climate catastrophe is now looking inevitable. We have simply left it too late to hold rising global temperatures to under 1.5C and so prevent a future of drowned coasts, ruined coral reefs, spreading deserts and melted glaciers.

Don't underestimate UK capabilities, MI6 chief to warn Russia

The head of MI6 will warn Russia not to underestimate the UK’s ability to retaliate in the wake of the Salisbury nerve agent attack, in a speech in which he will explain why Britain is developing “fourth-generation” espionage for a new and disturbing age.

The emergence of unconventional “hybrid threats” to UK national security, which could involve techniques such as cyber attacks, the spread of fake news and interference in domestic politics, is expected to be another central theme of Younger’s speech. Techniques developed during the two world wars, the cold war and after the 9/11 terrorist attack will no longer be enough to disrupt terrorist attacks, he will say.

Trump says China to cut tariffs on US cars after trade war truce

US and China have agreed not to increase tariffs and set a 90-day deadline to reach a broader trade deal.

During the meeting in Buenos Aires, the US agreed not to increase tariffs on January 1, as had been planned, while China agreed to immediately buy more agricultural products from US farmers.

US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said last week that he was examining all available tools to raise US tariffs on Chinese vehicles to the 40 percent level that China was charging on US-made vehicles.

Qatar to withdraw from OPEC in January 2019

Gulf nation's energy minister says withdrawal from 15-nation bloc will come into effect next month.

Since 2013, the amount of oil Qatar produced has steadily declined from about 728,000 barrels per day in 2013 to about 607,000 barrels per day in 2017, or just under two percent of OPEC's total output.

Meanwhile, total production during the same period increased from 30.7 million barrels per day to 32.4 million barrels per day.

Earlier this week, OPEC and Russia, who together produce about 40 percent of the world's oil, said they had agreed on new oil production cuts to ensure the oil price does not drop too much in the coming months.

Qatar is the world's biggest supplier of liquefied natural gas (LNG), producing almost 30 percent of the world total.

Trump laments ‘crazy’ US defense spending & arms race with ‘rivals’ China & Russia

Under the incumbent US president the country has made a sharp turn towards a more aggressive foreign policy. He reversed the Obama-era limitations on defense spending, pushing a multibillion hike in the military budget for FY2018and FY2019 through Congress.

Trump’s administration also passed a number of key national security documents like the Nuclear Posture Review and the National Military Strategy, which stated that a confrontation with Russia and China are primary goals for the US military.

The US president unleashed a barrage of tweets on Monday, starting with describing his meeting with China’s President Xi Jinping at a G20 summit in Argentina as “an extraordinary one” and “a BIG leap forward”, and ending with an “I have a dream-esque” vision of Xi, Russia’s Vladimir Putin and himself ending an arms race.

Microsoft vows to hand over all its technologies to ‘ethical & honorable’ US military

As big tech in the US faces increased opposition from its own employees over Pentagon contracts, the head of Microsoft Corporation appears to have decided to throw his weight behind the US military and to offer them full support.

Microsoft is “going to provide the US military with access to the best technology ... all the technology we create. Full stop,” Brad Smith, the president of the tech giant, said at the Reagan National Defense Forum, held at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California.

Smith also sought to explain his decision, saying his company actually wants “Silicon Valley to know just how ethical and honorable a tradition the military has.” He argued that the military should not be left out of global technological progress in the field of artificial intelligence, which is “of importance to everybody and not just young people who happen to live on the West Coast.”

The Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure or JEDI project will offer cloud computing services to the US military. According to publicly available information, JEDI aims to keep the military’s computing systems up-to-date by moving them onto one big cloud.

‘Penicillin’ against enemy guns: Russia completes trials of new counter-artillery system (VIDEO)

Russia has completed trials of its new system, which swiftly detects enemy mortar and artillery fire and provides targeting information for counter-fire. Unlike Western counterparts, it does not use radar to do the job.

The development of the 1B75 Penicillin was first revealed last year. It’s a counter-artillery system similar in purpose to the US AN/TPQ-37 Firefinder. The system detects enemy mortar and artillery fire and pinpoints origin of the shells, allowing troops to retaliate with deadly precision. What makes the Russian product stand out is that it does not use radar to track the projectiles and instead relies on other signals.

The Penicillin detection array includes four thermoacoustic sensors, which are deployed on the ground at some distance from the main vehicle. A block of six optical and six infrared cameras mounted on a foldable mast is also part of the system. The sensors detect sound waves produced by the fire and impact while the cameras track them in flight. The data is analyzed automatically. It takes the system just five seconds after hearing a shot to determine origin coordinates and feed the data to friendly artillery to fire back, according to the producer. There is a cost for not using radar however – shorter effective range. The 1B75 has a reported range of 25km (15.5 miles), compared to 50km (31 miles) for the AN/TPQ-37 and 60km (37 miles) for Sweden’s ARTHUR system.

The developer of the 1B75 Penicillin, Ruselectronics, which is part of the Russian defense conglomerate Rostec, announced last week that the system has completed all necessary tests to enter service. The first two units are expected to be supplied to the Russian Defense Ministry in 2020, it said.

Just like a real riot: US border cops stage massive readiness drills (VIDEO)

Dozens of US Customs and Border Protection officers in full riot gear have been marching, running and tossing fake tear gas amid loud bangs, as they trained to repel illegal immigrants trying to enter the country.

The drills, conducted on Saturday, created a truly apocalyptic sight, complete with white smoke and loud bangs. Traffic at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry was halted for around ten minutes and led to increased waits for travelers planning to cross border.

Around 8,000 Central American asylum seekers currently remain on the Mexican side of the border, causing havoc in Mexico’s Tijuana as they wait for their applications to be considered by US authorities. The arrival of the migrant caravan has led to beefed-up security along the entire US-Mexico border, including the deployment of over 5,000 troops as President Trump vowed to use force to prevent the caravan’s participants from making it to America.

Qatar ends 6-decade membership in OPEC, says decision not related to Saudi-led blockade

One of the world’s key energy producers, Qatar, is quitting the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) on January 1, Energy Minister Saad al-Kaabi said. Qatar has been an OPEC member for 57 years.

The announcement comes just days before a crucial meeting between the cartel’s members and its non-OPEC allies. Qatar, the world’s largest exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG), is still planning to take part in the meeting scheduled for December 6 in Vienna.

The decision is reportedly connected to Qatar’s plans to concentrate on developing its natural gas sector. It is expected to boost its annual LNG output from 77 million to 110 million tons.

Russia’s first LNG import terminal at Kaliningrad nears launch

Russia’s first liquefied natural gas (LNG) import facility in the exclave Kaliningrad on the Baltic Sea is close to start-up, S&P Global Platts reported on Friday, citing vessel tracking data and Asia-based traders.

The region of Kaliningrad, a Russian exclave squeezed in between Poland and Lithuania and without a land or maritime border with Russia, has been receiving natural gas supplies via the Minsk – Vilnius – Kaunas – Kaliningrad transit gas pipeline. Due to the region’s location, Russia’s gas giant Gazprom has been building the Kaliningrad LNG import, storage, and regasification terminal. LNG regasification will be carried out with a floating LNG unit (FLNG), according to Gazprom’s plans.
