For Canada and U.S., ‘That Relationship Is Gone’ After Bitter Nafta Talks

He called his relationship with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada “testy.” But President Trump put that down to heated trade negotiations only.

Now that the newly named deal was settled, things between the two men — and by extension, two countries — were supposedly rosy again.

“We’ve always had actually a very good relationship,” Mr. Trump told reporters gathered in the Rose Garden on Monday.

If you swept a microphone across the length of Canada at that moment, the sound recorded would have been of eyeballs rolling. Millions of them.

Russia Accused in Cyber Attacks on Investigators Pursuing Doping and Poisoning Cases

WASHINGTON — Russian intelligence officers brazenly launched cyber attacks on investigators pursuing cases of Russian malfeasance around the globe, Western officials said on Tuesday, offering a litany of victims including antidoping agencies, inspectors scrutinizing the poisoning of a former spy in Britain and others examining the downing of a passenger jet in 2014.

The Justice Department indicted seven Russian intelligence officers on charges of trying to hack into antidrug agencies in the United States, Canada and elsewhere, in an apparent effort to undermine their pursuit of Russian doping.

Hours earlier, officials in Europe accused Russia of cyberattacks on the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. The group was investigating the poisoning in Britain of a former Russian intelligence officer, Sergei V. Skripal, and his daughter. British officials have accused Russia of using a nerve agent to try to kill the former spy, prompting the expulsion of Russian diplomats from Western countries this year.

Dutch officials pointed to four Russians who they said were also behind an attempt to hack a Swiss laboratory testing a nerve agent for the chemical weapons organization as part of its investigation into the poisoning of the Skripals. On Monday, President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia called Mr. Skripal “simply a scumbag” and “a traitor to the motherland.”

Chinese Energy Company Official Talked Arms Deals and Evading Iran Sanctions, U.S. Says

The mysterious Chinese oil company raised eyebrows wherever it went. It struck high-profile and politically sensitive deals in Russia, the Czech Republic and elsewhere. Its executives hinted at deep connections within Beijing’s halls of power as well as with China’s powerful military. Then, its founder and chairman vanished.

Today, investigators in the United States are trying to unravel the extensive business relationships of the company, known as CEFC China, and its offshoots. Federal prosecutors now say that an executive at its nonprofit arm explored businesses beyond oil: brokering arms deals in other countries and looking for ways to dodge American sanctions on Iran.

In a filing on Tuesday in a federal court in New York, prosecutors said that the executive, a former Hong Kong city official named Patrick Ho, discussed using the company’s connections to help sell weapons to Chad, Qatar and Libya. The prosecutors also accused Mr. Ho of exploring whether CEFC could serve as a middleman for an Iranian company to gain access to funds from a Chinese bank under international sanctions.

Edward Kim, a lawyer for Mr. Ho, declined to comment on Wednesday. CEFC did not respond to a request for comment. Federal prosecutors did not say whether any of these deals went through and did not press additional charges.

Putin to ink arms deal with India amid threat of US sanctions

The Russian president to ink defence deal worth $5bn as Moscow plans to cement ties amid opposition from the US.

The Kremlin said before the two-day visit by Putin and top Russian ministers that the "key feature" would be the signing of a $5bn deal for the S-400 air defence system, despite the risk of US sanctions against countries buying Russian defence equipment.

Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who appear to enjoy a personal rapport, are also likely to discuss a deal for four Krivak-class frigates worth $2bn and 200 light utility Ka-226 helicopters pegged at $1bn.

Also on the agenda is Russian training for Indian astronauts as New Delhi aims to launch its first crewed space mission in 2022.

After trade deal win, Trump doubles down on China

No plans for China-US negotiations over trade war with analysts saying Trump's confident he'll come out on top.

James Reinl

Under Chapter 32, the US could pull out of USMCA if either Canada or Mexico strike a trade deal with China that Washington does not like - making it unlikely or extremely difficult for either partner to take that risk.

Many also fear that Beijing's Made in China 2025 project - an industrial upgrade strategy to shift China's economy into robotics, energy-saving cars and other hi-tech goods - threatens the US's position in top-end sectors.

Washington sharply escalated the trade row in September with more tariffs, this time on $200bn worth of Chinese goods. Those taxes took effect from September 24, starting at 10 percent and increasing to 25 percent from the start of next year.

Tariffs, in theory, will make US-made products cheaper than imported ones and encourage consumers to buy American, boosting local businesses and supporting the national economy. But many US firms and industry groups say tariffs hurt US businesses.

Moon missions in five years: Bezos' Blue Origin sets sights high

Lunar lander, which is still in conceptual design phase, aims to provide reusable access to the moon's surface.

The lander is part of Blue Origin's broader mission of enabling a future in which millions of people live and work in space, the company said.

Bezos [founder of Amazon], has said it aims to land on the moon in about five years.

Blue Origin is also developing its New Shepard rocket for short space tourism trips and a heavy-lift launch rocket called New Glenn for satellite launch contracts.

Blue's launch vehicles face strong competition from several other aerospace companies, including Elon Musk's SpaceX and Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic.

‘New reality’? Israel may increasingly use F-35s in Syria raids after Russia’s S-300 delivery

Tel Aviv's self-reserved right to freely strike ‘Iranian targets’ anywhere inside or outside Syria was severely undermined by Moscow’s transfer of S-300 air defense systems and accompanying hardware to Damascus. The surface-to-air interceptors delivered to the Syrian Arab Army, as well as Moscow's resolve to jam the radar, navigation, and communications systems on any aircraft attacking targets in Syria via the Mediterranean coast might complicate missions for Israeli F-15s and F-16s. So, to avert potential threats to their fighter planes, Israel will rely more on the F-35 to carry out its missions in Syria, Galei Tzahal (Army Radio) reported.

In recent years, Tel Aviv purchased 50 F-35 units, known in Israel by their Hebrew name, the ‘Adir,’ from Lockheed Martin, at the cost of $125 million each. Eight of the planes have already been transferred to Israel, while 33 more are expected to arrive by 2021, an IAF source said.

According to the technical characteristics of the US-made jets, the active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar system should, in theory, allow the jet to operate undetected inside enemy territory and to evade advanced missile defense systems such as the S-300 by suppressing its signals. Whether or not the F-35’s ‘stealth’ capabilities will be effective in real battle conditions is yet to be seen as, in the past, the aircraft, on top of hundreds of bugs and glitches in its systems, was experiencing radar problems.

Dozens of Georgians likely killed by US toxin or bioweapon disguised as drug research – Russian MoD

The Richard Lugar Center for Public Health Research has been operating near Georgian capital Tbilisi since August 2013. A former Georgian minister not long ago claimed he obtained leaked documents detailing the work of this facility. The Russian defense ministry on Thursday said the documents indicate that a test of weapons of mass destruction may have taken place at the cite.

The documents record the deaths of 73 people over a short period of time, indicating a test of “a highly toxic chemical or biological agents with high lethality rate,” said Igor Kirillov, the commander of the Russian military branch responsible for defending troops from radiological, chemical and biological weapons.

White House finds no proof of sexual misconduct allegations against Kavanaugh in FBI report – WSJ

The White House has concluded that an FBI probe has found no evidence of sexual misconduct on the part of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, the Wall Street Journal reported.

The investigation, which was completed two days ahead of its Friday deadline, has been widely criticized by Democrats as incomplete. The investigation was launched in the wake of a string of allegations levelled against Kavanaugh as the Senate Judiciary Committee deliberated on his confirmation.

The Senate is set to review the findings on Thursday. Republicans framed the FBI probe as a concession to Democrats, whom they have accused of trying to stonewall Kavanaugh’s nomination. Kavanaugh’s contentious and somewhat theatrical nomination process has become a highly polarizing issue in the United States, galvanizing the #MeToo movement while also provoking deep suspicion among conservatives that Kavanaugh has been the victim of a liberal witch hunt.

While the Democratic establishment has rallied around Ford, her testimony before the Senate last week revealed that the facts surrounding her alleged attack are far from clear. She was unable to provide a precise date or even location of the attack. A written statement from her former boyfriend also raised questions about the truthfulness of her sworn testimony.

Russian pension reform bill signed into law by Putin

A package of bills regulating pension reform was published on Thursday and its main part will come into force on January 1, 2019. The main feature is the gradual increase of the retirement age from 60 to 65 years for men and from 55 to 60 years for women. The transition period is scheduled to fully complete by 2028 and 2034 respectively.

The initial bill prepared and drafted by the government ordered an even higher increase in retirement age and quite expectantly was met with resistance from opposition parties, criticism in mass media and even several protest rallies. This opposition resulted in a setback in positions of parliamentary majority party United Russia which had backed the bill – its candidates lost in several gubernatorial elections in early September and it also lost the majority positions in some regional legislatures.

Putin personally intervened in the situation by making a televised address to the nation in which he said that the unappealing reform was necessary as a growing deficit in the Russian pension system caused mainly by the demographic situation was putting it on the brink of total collapse.
