China starts to assert its world view at UN as influence grows

China, for years prepared to take a back seat at the UN, is now seeking positions of power, increasing its budget contributions and starting to assert its world view, notably the preeminence of national sovereignty over human rights. In part China is filling a space created by the withdrawal of the US from bodies such as the Geneva-based UN Human Rights Council and the UN’s cultural arm, Unesco.

Rod Rosenstein, deputy attorney general, to reportedly resign

The deputy attorney general was overseeing the investigation of Russian election interference and links between the Donald Trump campaign and Moscow. The New York Times reported last week that Rosenstein had discussed secretly recording the president and invoking the 25th amendment to remove Trump from office. Rosenstein said the report was “inaccurate”. Rosenstein resigned under pressure, expecting to be fired, Axios reported. Rosenstein’s prospective departure throws into question the oversight of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation.

Russian at Oslo IT conference held on suspicion of spying

The arrest came in the same week as investigative journalists discovered a series of passports that may belong to Russian intelligence agents abroad, including the two men accused of the poisoning in Salisbury. Earlier this month, the Guardian also reported that Dutch police had expelled two alleged Russian spies accused of planning to hack into the Swiss chemicals laboratory where the novichok nerve agent samples from the Salisbury attack were analysed.

Speech recognition is tech's next giant leap, says Google

“Speech recognition and the understanding of language is core to the future of search and information,” said Gomes . “But there are lots of hard problems such as understanding how a reference works, understanding what ‘he’, ‘she’ or ‘it’ refers to in a sentence. It’s not at all a trivial problem to solve in language and that’s just one of the millions of problems to solve in language.”

China Is Confronting New U.S. Hostility. But Is It Ready for the Fight?

The Chinese leader, wearing a dark Mao suit, and the American president, in a black tuxedo, stood side by side with arms aloft at the Kennedy Center. Deng Xiaoping and Jimmy Carter smiled broadly as the orchestra played "Getting to Know You," signaling the dawn of a new era of friendship and cooperation between their two nations.

Over the next 40 years, China and the United States built the most important economic relationship in the world and worked together on issues such as regional security, counterterrorism and climate change. Taking Mr. Deng's lead, China played the junior partner, if not always deferential then at least soft-pedaling its ambitions and avoiding conflict with the much stronger United States.

Now, faster than many in either nation expected, that has all changed.

On Monday, the United States will begin taxing $200 billion in imports from China, the biggest round of tariffs to take effect yet in an escalating trade war. President Trump says the measures are necessary to fight an economic model that requires American companies to hand over technology in exchange for market access and provides state subsidies to Chinese competitors.

China's strongman leader, Xi Jinping, presiding over an economy gaining quickly on the United States, has openly challenged American leadership abroad while dashing hopes of any political thaw at home. During this time, both Republicans and Democrats in Washington have turned on Beijing, accusing it of imperial ambitions in Asia, aggression in disputed waters, persecution of ethnic minorities and unscrupulous trade policies aimed at dominating the industries of the future.

Trump at the U.N.: Undiplomatic? This Time, Aides Fear the Opposite

When President Trump made his first visit to the United Nations last year, he ridiculed North Korea's leader, Kim Jong-un, as a suicidal "rocket man" and threatened to "totally destroy" his country. He also vowed to rip up the Iran nuclear deal, which he called an "embarrassment to the United States."

This week, he returns to trumpet the overture he has since made to the North Korean leader, whom he now calls "very honorable," despite evidence that Mr. Kim continues to build a nuclear arsenal. And while he has dealt his long-promised blow to the nuclear deal, he has also said he would "always be available" for a meeting with Iran's president, Hassan Rouhani.

For Mr. Trump's advisers, the biggest risk at the United Nations General Assembly this year is the reverse of what it was last year: not that he will be dangerously undiplomatic, but that he will be overly enthusiastic about engagement with wily adversaries.

Far from restraining Mr. Trump's belligerent tendencies, his senior aides are engaged in a quiet effort to avoid a direct encounter with Iran's leader that he would be unprepared to handle or concessions that they fear could undermine their effort to keep pressure on North Korea.

Trump's China Fight Puts U.S. Tech in the Cross Hairs

President Trump says his trade war with China will protect America's dominance and derail Beijing's plan for technological and economic supremacy.

But as the fight kicks into high gear this week, American tech and telecom companies are warning that the industry's growing reliance on products made and assembled in China means they are more likely to be casualties, not victors, in the skirmish.

Mr. Trump's next round of tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods goes into effect on Monday, hitting thousands of consumer products from handbags to refrigerators to bicycles. The tariffs will also hit the tech and telecom companies that provide much of the gear that powers the internet, mobile networks, data storage and other technology. United States customs will begin collecting a tax on circuit boards, semiconductors, cell tower radios, modems and other products made and assembled in China and exported into America.

Those tariffs, Intel warned in a letter last month, are "a game changer for the American consumer." The tariffs begin at a rate of 10 percent and increase to 25 percent next January.

Iran's Revolutionary Guards, Humiliated by Attack, Vow to Retaliate - The New York Times

Soldiers in dress uniform lay prone in the street. Others, apparently heavily armed, faced the assailants, then threw themselves to the ground without firing back. Some just ran for their lives.

Captured on video and widely shared on social media, the attack over the weekend on a military parade in Iran by the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps was a humiliating blow, and on Monday the elite military unit and its allies vowed revenge against Israel, Saudi Arabia, the United States and even the United Arab Emirates.

Iran's critics, including the United Arab Emirates and the United States, responded unsympathetically, stopping short of describing the attack as terrorism, even though it was claimed by the Islamic State, among others

Sanciones: Moscú y Pekín lanzan advertencia a Washington

Russia to supply Syria with S-300 defense systems

Moscow will boost Syria's armaments by sending them powerful S-300 missile defense systems, Russia's Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu has said. Moscow claims Israeli jets caused Syrians to shoot down a Russian spy plane.

Syrian regime troops will receive S-300 missile defense systems from Russia within the next two weeks, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said on Monday.

The modernized version of the Soviet-era system "is capable of intercepting aerial attacks at the distance of over 250 kilometers and simultaneously countering several targets," the minister said.

The move comes after Moscow blamed Israel for indirectly causing the destruction of Russian Il-20 reconnaissance plane last week. The incident claimed the lives of 15 Russian soldiers.

Chinese medical vessel docks in Venezuela

The humanitarian tour will provide medical help to the crisis-ridden country, but Venezuelan officials said it was also part of a "strategic defense operation." Pharmaceutical prices have soared as the currency tanks.

The Chinese army medical vessel "Peace Ark" arrived in Venezuela's La Guaira port on Saturday, as the country faces a deep economic crisis that has devastated its public health services.

It is the latest stop for the People's Liberation Army Navy's ship in its 11-nation "Mission Harmony" tour. The visit is taking place on the heels of the US announcing that it would also be sending a navy medical ship, the USS Comfort, to help Venezuelan refugees in Colombia, a move that Caracas has criticized.

The Peace Ark is equipped with 300 beds, eight operating theaters and a medical helicopter. It has so far traveled to more than 40 countries and provided free medical services to 180,000 people since it was commissioned in 2008.

Entra en vigor nueva tanda de aranceles de EE. UU. a China
