Chinese politicians and experts call on the US to look in the mirror to reflect on how its funding has tainted think tanks

While US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo calls for vigilance over think tanks he believes are "tainted by the machinations" of foreign governments, he turns blind eye to the fact that the US is the world's worst when it comes to interfering in other countries' internal affairs by funding think tanks to do its bidding, experts said.

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying on Wednesday mocked US hypocrisy on her Twitter account after the Trump administration demanded international think tanks in the US to publicly disclose the funding they receive from foreign governments or risk being forbidden from engaging with the State Department.

China sends stern warning via commemoration of war it won against the US 70 years ago in Korea

There, Chinese President Xi Jinping mounted a scathing denunciation of forces that seek to contain China's development and issued a stern warning that the Chinese people were not to be trifled with, and any aggression against China would be dealt with head-on.

President Xi said Friday that Chinese people will never sit idly by while China's sovereignty, security and development interests are undermined, and if such situations occur, "they will certainly deal with them head-on."

Chinese analysts said Xi's remarks on Friday were similar to China's warning to the US before the US-led "UN forces" crossed the 38th parallel in 1950, showing the current tensions between the two countries is also approaching the brink of conflict, and if the US fails to avoid a new conflict with China,

It is necessary to speak to invaders in the language they know: that is, a war must be fought to deter invasion, and violence must be stopped by violence, Xi said, adding that a victory is essential for winning peace and respect.

Xi said that China will never seek hegemony nor expansion, and is firmly opposed to hegemony and power politics.

A day ahead of Xi's speech, authorities announced that China is mulling amendments to its Law on National Defense amid profound changes in the world over the past two decades by adding key formulations, including threats to the country's development interests, as reasons for defense mobilization, and involvement in global security governance.

Republicans push China Task Force Act as election, propaganda ploy

The China Task Force, comprised of 15 Republican lawmakers, released the China Task Force Act on Tuesday.

It includes 137 anti-China bills and other provisions that aim to comprehensively address the so-called threats posed by China.

In the beginning, they tried to bring some Democrats with strong anti-China stance into the group, hoping to tie them to the Republican Party's chariot to form a stronger campaign to make China the scapegoat for the COVID-19 outbreak. But their attempts to form a bipartisan group failed as Democrats had been on guard about it and wanted to leave this batch of Republicans to their own devices. McCarthy used the Democrats' refusal to join the group as an excuse to accuse them of being soft on China.

The Republican Party has long regarded its anti-China stance as a battle cry. It helps cover up negative effects brought about by the administration's failure in fighting the COVID-19.

The China Task Force is trying to instill an anti-China mentality into all levels of American political society through legislative means. This means that no matter which party takes office, it will have to follow the already established anti-China framework. This may well force China-US ties to move toward a new cold war.
