Covid-19 Live Updates: Drugmaker Shares Details of Its Vaccine Trial
The document suggests that the first analysis of the trial data may not be conducted until late December, and that there may not be enough information then to determine whether the vaccine works. Subsequent analyses, scheduled for March and May, are more likely to provide an answer.

UN: Maduro's security forces committed 'crimes against humanity'
The government of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has committed systematic human rights violations including killings and torture amounting to crimes against humanity, United Nations investigators said in a report on Wednesday.
Reasonable grounds existed to believe that Maduro and his interior and defence ministers ordered or contributed to the crimes documented in the report to silence opposition, the investigators said.
American 'spy' held in Venezuela not sent by US: Elliott Abrams
A United States citizen held by Venezuelan authorities on accusations of being an American spy was not sent to Venezuela by the US government, a senior Trump administration official said on Wednesday.
Venezuela's chief prosecutor Tarek William Saab on Monday announced charges of terrorism and weapons trafficking against Matthew John Heath, detained last week in the South American country where socialist President Nicolas Maduro is deeply at odds with the US.

Illusion for the US to use WTO to contain China
The World Trade Organization (WTO) on Tuesday said that the US violated international trade rules by imposing tariffs on China in 2018 during the US-initiated trade war. Unsurprisingly, Washington expressed its dissatisfaction with the result, by describing the WTO as "completely inadequate." US President Donald Trump said he had to "do something about the WTO because they've let China get away with murder."
The WTO's latest ruling exposed the US' unilateral and unethical behavior. The US is no longer capable of leading the world in an anti-China alliance. It should know that the multilateral trading system, under the leadership of the WTO, is still the mainstream of the world.

The term ‘new Non-Aligned Movement’ is too simplistic in multilateral world
Some small- and medium-sized countries have been increasingly feeling the pressure of choosing sides between China and the US, as tensions mount between the two and the politics of Washington heats up.
For example, Indonesia delivered a message before the recent ASEAN foreign ministers' meetings, saying that ASEAN does not want to get trapped by China-US rivalry. The term "new Non-Aligned Movement" has also been voiced in Asia and Latin America.
In this case, the "new Non-Aligned Movement" concept falls into a trap. It uses a way of viewing the international situation with a traditional binary way of thinking. It perceives the inter-state relationship from the perspective of geopolitical confrontation. Moreover, some countries seek to ease the pressure of "choosing sides" by using certain historical memories for their courses of action
China and the member states have long held consensus on enhancing South-South cooperation and establishing a new order in international community. This is exactly the purpose of the Non-Aligned Movement. In this sense, the so-called new Non-Aligned Movement separates China's friendly relations with other member countries and goes against the purposes of the organization.

From April to June, German exports to China reached nearly 23 billion euros ($27billion) while the exports to the US fell to 20 billion euros.

Pompeo insists on Iran sanctions
of State Mike Pompeo insisted on Wednesday that the US will enforce new "United Nations (UN)" sanctions on Iran starting next week, despite overwhelming consensus that Washington is out of bounds.
Trump has already enforced sweeping unilateral US sanctions on Iran, inflicting a heavy toll in a bid to curb the clerical state's regional influence.
The UN has clearly said that it cannot proceed with the reimposition of UN sanctions, with 13 of the Security Council's 15 nations objecting to the US move.
European allies of the US say that they support extending the arms embargo but want to preserve a diplomatic solution on the nuclear issue, which they see as more important.

Jean-Pierre Stroobants y Virginie Malingre

Hurricane Sally swamps US Gulf Coast with flooding and torrential rain
Hurricane Sally touched down on the coast of Alabama in the US early Wednesday morning local time, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) confirmed, killing at least one person and bringing with it torrential rains and a surge of ocean water that could cause devastating flooding in the days to come.
The Category 2 hurricane moved ashore at a slow 5 kilometers (3 miles) per hour, hitting the Gulf Coast with winds blowing 165 kilometers per hour.
The coastal areas of the states of Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida are particularly vulnerable to damage from the hurricane, the NHC said.

An Oil Giant’s Case for Peak Demand, Even Without Climate Heroics
BP’s annual energy outlook sees consumption topping out in the next decade even in its most likely scenarios.
That’s the main takeaway from BP Plc’s annual energy outlook published this week outlining a handful of scenarios for the future of global fuel and electricity demand, and it’s a big admission in its own right. Even bigger is the way BP concludes it will happen: not because of aggressive policies aimed at reaching net-zero global greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, nor as a result of carbon prices or other interventions aimed at limiting global temperature rise to 2° Celsius over pre-industrial levels. No, BP says that even if energy policy keeps evolving at pretty much the pace it is today, oil demand will still start declining.
