U.S. Poised to Send 150 Troops to Patrol Northeastern Syria

WASHINGTON — The Pentagon is preparing to send about 150 troops to northeastern Syria to conduct ground patrols with Turkish forces, reversing at least temporarily a withdrawal from Syria that President Trump ordered last December.

The new troop deployment, which has not been previously reported, is part of an expanding series of military and diplomatic steps the United States has taken in recent weeks to defuse escalating tensions with Turkey, a NATO ally, over American support for Syrian Kurdish fighters. Those fighters led the ground war against the Islamic State, a shared enemy, but Turkey considers them terrorists.

The United States currently has just under 1,000 troops in Syria, mainly to help stamp out remaining pockets of Islamic State fighters.

Turkey threatened last month to invade northeast Syria to rout the Syrian Kurds from territory along the border they seized from the Islamic State. In response, the Pentagon in recent weeks has rushed to both set up joint reconnaissance flights and ground patrols with Turkish forces in a narrow buffer zone inside Syria, and destroy Kurdish fortifications near the border that Turkey considered threatening. Two senior American generals met this week with their Turkish counterparts in Ankara, Turkey’s capital.

Facebook Suspends Netanyahu Campaign Bot for Hate Speech

JERUSALEM — Facebook suspended a chatbot operated by the official account of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday for violating hate speech rules after it sent a message saying that Israel’s Arab politicians “want to destroy us all.”

The message, which went out in the name of a Netanyahu campaign volunteer, was trying to rally right-wing support for Mr. Netanyahu and his conservative Likud party in next Tuesday’s election.

Chatbots are software programs that try to emulate human conversation. In this instance, the bot provided a pop-up message to viewers of Mr. Netanyahu’s official Facebook page.

It urged supporters to come out to the polls to prevent the advent of “a dangerous left-wing government,” whose Jewish leaders, it said, would rely on the support of Arab politicians “who want to destroy us all — women, children and men — and enable a nuclear Iran that would wipe us out.”

The comment comes amid a bitter and divisive election campaign in which Mr. Netanyahu has targeted Arab parties and citizens. He pushed, unsuccessfully, to allow party representatives to film inside polling stations, ostensibly to prevent voter fraud.

China Drops Some U.S. Pork and Soybean Tariffs as Trade Tensions Ease

BEIJING — China will exempt some American soybeans, pork and other agricultural products from additional tariffs, state media reported on Friday, in the latest move by Beijing to ease trade tensions with the United States.

China Central Television, the nation’s official broadcaster, and other official outlets reported the move without disclosing details about the tariff exemptions. But in a brief report issued late Friday afternoon, CCTV cited President Trump’s move on Thursday to delay Washington’s new tariffs by two weeks so that they would take effect after trade talks scheduled for early October.

The announcement was another sign that the world’s two largest economies are trying to calm a trade war that has rocked global markets and shaken confidence, casting a pall over the prospects for global growth.

The promise to hold off additional tariffs on American pork and soybeans comes as China’s leadership is facing challenges on several fronts, including an economic slowdown and civil unrest in Hong Kong.

Russia asks Interpol for help over alleged CIA mole's whereabouts

The alleged CIA mole, named this week by Russian media as Oleg Smolenkov, was whisked to safety by US intelligence agents during a family holiday in Montenegro in June 2017, CNN reported earlier this week.

CNN said that the alleged CIA spy had been feeding information to the United States for decades, and had direct contact with Putin. It also said he had confirmed to US intelligence that Russia’s president oversaw the Kremlin’s alleged interference in the 2016 American presidential elections that brought Trump to power.

'Everyone gets paid': Mexico’s migration networks are thriving despite crackdown

Seeking to avert crippling trade tariffs threatened by Donald Trump, Andrés Manuel López Obrador has deployed a newly created national guard across the country to stop the migrant flow. Checkpoints have sprung up along major roads, and immigration officials have raided migrant shelters.

This week, Mexico’s president declared the plan a success after apprehending around 108,500 migrants during the first half of 2019 – a 70% increase compared with the same period last year.

Migration always drops off in the hot summer months, but US figures also showed a dramatic fall.

But despite the clampdown, huge numbers of people continue to travel north – aided by Mexico’s booming migration industry, a multi-faceted array of networks including coyotes, corrupt officials, crooks and concerned citizens.

UN chief launches plan of action to safeguard religious sites

UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Thursday launched a plan of action to safeguard religious sites, against the backdrop of a surge in attacks on places of worship and widespread hate speech.

The plan of action, developed by the UN Alliance of Civilizations, provides concrete recommendations to support member states in their efforts to ensure that religious sites are safe, that worshippers can observe their rituals in peace, and that the values of compassion and tolerance are fostered globally, Guterres told a launch ceremony.

"Religious sites are powerful symbols of our collective consciousness. When people are attacked because of their religion or beliefs, all of society is diminished," he said. "Houses of worship around the world must be safe havens for reflection and peace, not sites of bloodshed and terror. People everywhere must be allowed to observe and practice their faiths in peace."

With this plan of action, the United Nations is taking an important step to advance that critical goal and address what has emerged as one of the leading global challenges of our era, he said.

Austria, Croatia plan to push for EU expansion in Western Balkans

VIENNA, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- Austria and Croatia plan to join forces to push for a European Union (EU) expansion further into the Western Balkans, the foreign ministers of the two countries said at a press conference here on Friday, according to an APA report.

Croatian Foreign Minister Gordan Grlic Radman told the media at that joint press conference following a meeting with his Austrian counterpart Alexander Schallenberg that the related countries must work hard to fulfill the EU accession criteria.

The Croatian official said that these include the areas of rule of law and structural reforms, things his own country had to deal with by itself prior to its EU accession in 2013.

In addition, the issue will be a priority for Croatia when it takes on the presidency of the Council of the EU in the first half of 2020.

Schallenberg said formal accession talks between the EU and both Albania and North Macedonia scheduled for October represent a "fork in the road," given that if the EU does not make accession negotiations possible, it will "lose credibility where expansion is concerned."

TRIPOLI, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- Libya's eastern-based army said Friday that it attacked the air base of the city of Misurata, some 200 km east of the capital Tripoli, and destroyed three drones of the UN-backed government.

"The air force targeted Misrata air base, which launched three Turkish drones to attack the Jufra air base, but the drones were all destroyed without being able to achieve their objectives," the information office of the army said in a statement.

"The targeting of the city of Misrata was due to the use of Turkish drones to the city airport. The general command has warned against this, but to no avail," said the statement.

The UN-backed government confirmed targeting Jufra air base, which is located some 650 km east of Tripoli and controlled by the eastern-based army.

Sudan's parties vow to restore peace, stability

JUBA, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- Sudan's negotiating parties on Friday applauded South Sudan's mediation efforts and expressed their commitment to restoring peace and stability in Sudan.

The Juba declaration is a key step toward achieving much-needed lasting peace in Sudan, Sudan Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok said, adding that his sovereignty council is ready to have dialogue with all the armed groups in Sudan's Darfur, South Kordofan, and Nile regions to put the country in economic prosperity.

"The outcome of the unification of the factions of the Sudan Revolutionary Front (SRF) is the right choice for the people of Sudan," Hamdok said in Juba after addressing a joint meeting with the opposition factions. "This move will facilitate the peace process in the near future."

Hamdan Dagalo, chief negotiator of the SRF, said the front is committed to supporting the sovereignty council administration as a good gesture for achieving peace and stability in Sudan.

Netanyahu denies report of Israeli spying near White House

Israeli prime minister calls media report about surveillance in Washington, DC a 'complete fabrication'.

Speaking on a trip to Russia on Thursday, Netanyahu said there was no eavesdropping on mobile phones around the US presidency because he had forbidden spying against the US.

Online news outlet Politico reported that an investigation by the FBI and other US agencies concluded that Israel was most likely behind several so-called stingray scanners, which mimic cellphone towers to intercept nearby calls and text messages, that were discovered in downtown Washington in 2017.

A former senior intelligence official told Politico that the Trump administration has not taken any action against Israel, nor privately scolded its leaders, following the conclusion.

Turkey's former PM Davutoglu resigns from ruling AK Party

Ahmet Davutoglu quits after party decided to send him to disciplinary board, says will set up a new political movement.

In recent months, Davutoglu has accused the AK Party of deviating from its core principles, hitting out at the government's economic record and Erdogan himself.

Erdogan has seen an increasing number of defections from former allies in recent months, amid disquiet over the crackdown on political opponents following a failed coup in 2016.

Most notable among the defectors has been former Minister of Economy Ali Babacan, who this week told Turkish newspaper Karar that he would launch his own party by the end of the year.

US to reveal Saudi official allegedly tied to 9/11 attackers

The person is last of three Saudi officials referred to in FBI report into the 2001 attacks that killed nearly 3,000.

The case has long threatened to embarrass the Saudi government, which has repeatedly denied links to al-Qaeda, and would leave it exposed to claims of damages that could reach billions of dollars.

The person is the last of three main officials in Saudi Arabia referred to in an FBI report into the attacks and allegedly assisted some of the attackers after they arrived in the US.

An official report into the attacks in 2002 said that some of the attackers had received funds from Saudi officials, "at least two" of whom were "alleged by some to be Saudi intelligence officers."

The two were Fahad al-Thumairy and Omar al-Bayoumi, who were attached to Saudi Arabia's US embassy at the time.

Rumours have tied the individual to the Saudi royal family. But his identity has remained classified as Washington and Riyadh worked closely after the attacks to root out al-Qaeda's network across the Middle East and South Asia.
