Trump Leaves Open Possibility of Easing Iranian Sanctions to Spur Nuclear Talks

WASHINGTON — President Trump appeared to take a step back from his administration’s “maximum pressure” campaign against Iran on Wednesday, leaving open the possibility of easing economic sanctions before starting new nuclear negotiations with Tehran.

Although he also warned Iran against restarting production of the material necessary to make a nuclear bomb — as the clerical government in Tehran has threatened — Mr. Trump made clear he was ready for diplomatic talks.

“I do believe they’d like to make a deal,” Mr. Trump told reporters at the White House. “If they do, that’s great; and if they don’t, that’s great too. But they have tremendous financial difficulty, and the sanctions are getting tougher and tougher.”

He shrugged when asked if he would consider easing the sanctions to secure a meeting with Iran. “We’ll see what happens,” Mr. Trump said.

Russia Raids Offices and Homes of Navalny Allies

MOSCOW — In a nationwide crackdown to prevent discontent in Moscow from spreading to far-flung regions, Russian security forces on Thursday raided and searched hundreds of homes and offices across the country of activists affiliated with the opposition leader Aleksei A. Navalny.

The raids, the biggest operation yet against Mr. Navalny and his supporters, were carried out in more than 40 cities and towns as part of a criminal money-laundering investigation announced in August by the authorities against his Anti-Corruption Foundation. The foundation has been the vanguard of recent street protests in Moscow that led to the arrests of more than 2,000 people.

Mr. Navalny issued a statement denouncing the raids as the biggest police operation, in geographical reach, in Russia’s modern history and a clear attempt to “intimidate” and “demoralize.” He said security officials from the police, the National Guard and the Federal Security Service, or F.S.B., had simultaneously raided more than 200 sites in 41 towns and cities.

Also raided as part of the same investigation were the homes of activists in Golos, an independent organization that monitors elections.

How Jewish Should the Jewish State Be? The Question Shadows an Israeli Vote

JERUSALEM — For years, the resentment had been building.

In Israel, Jewish men and women are drafted into the military, but the ultra-Orthodox are largely exempt. Unlike other Israelis, many ultra-Orthodox receive state subsidies to study the Torah and raise large families.

And in a country that calls itself home to all Jews, ultra-Orthodox rabbis have a state-sanctioned monopoly on events like marriage, divorce and religious conversions.

A series of political twists has suddenly jolted these issues to the fore, and the country’s long-simmering secular-religious divide has become a central issue in the national election on Tuesday.

In a country buffeted by a festering conflict with the Palestinians, increasingly open warfare with Iran and a prime minister facing indictment on corruption charges, the election has been surprisingly preoccupied with the question of just how Jewish — and whose idea of Jewish — the Jewish state should be.

Three Australians Are Being Held in Iran, Government Says

Three citizens of Australia are being held in Iran, the Australian government said on Wednesday, confirming the detentions as frictions remain high between Tehran and Western nations over the imperiled 2015 accord limiting its nuclear program.

The Australian government said it was providing consular assistance to the families of those detained, and it reminded travelers that they risk arbitrary detention when visiting Iran. The government provided no other details, citing privacy requirements.

The Times of London, which first reported the detentions, said the three people jailed were a British-Australian blogger and her Australian boyfriend, as well as a British-Australian academic.

The newspaper said that the couple was taken into custody about 10 weeks ago, and that the scholar was detained earlier and had since been sentenced to a decade in prison on unknown charges.

Israel accused of planting spying devices near White House

Israel is likely to have planted mobile phone spying devices near the White House and other sensitive locations in the US capital over the past two years, according to a report from Politico that cited three former US officials.

The miniature surveillance devices mimic telecommunications towers to gather information, including the contents of phone calls. The US government concluded Israeli operatives were most likely to have put them in place to spy on Donald Trump and his associates, the news website reported.

Supreme court's action to allow Trump to deny asylum reverses years of US policy

The supreme court ruled on Wednesday to allow the Trump administration to enforce nationwide restrictions that would prevent most Central American immigrants from seeking asylum in the US.

The administration announced in July a new policy that would deny asylum to anyone who passes through another country on their way to the US without seeking protection there first, therefore affecting almost all migrants who arrive at the US-Mexico border.

U.S. Supreme Court backs Trump administration's tough asylum restrictions

WASHINGTON, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. Supreme Court late Wednesday permitted the Trump administration to enforce its tough asylum restrictions nationwide prohibiting migrants from seeking asylum in the United States.

The rule, put forward by the Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security on July 15, will disallow asylum application by migrants entering the United States through a third country without seeking protection there.

The Trump administration said it was necessary to limit the number of Central American migrants crossing the U.S. southern border via Mexico, citing "an unprecedented surge of" people enter the United States "illegally" and seek asylum when they are caught.

Netanyahu says Israel "probably" start war in Gaza

ERUSALEM, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Thursday that Israel "will probably have no choice" but to launch a war in Gaza to halt rocket fire at its southern part.

Speaking on Kan Bet Israel's national radio four days before the parliamentary elections, Netanyahu said a war "would be the last option." However, he said Israel "will probably have no choice but to set out on a full-scale military campaign, a war, against the terror forces in Gaza."

The recent projectiles, including two rockets launched towards the southern city of Ashdod while Netanyahu was on a campaign rally there, were apparently fired by militants not affiliated with Hamas, an Islamist Palestinian movement that runs Gaza.

However, Netanyahu said he holds Hamas accountable for the fire, vowing to "bring down the Hamas regime in Gaza" in order to remove the threat of more rocket attacks.

Iraqi forces discover IS ammunition cache in western Iraq

BAGHDAD, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- The Iraqi military said Thursday that an ammunition cache belonging to Islamic State (IS) militants was discovered in Iraq's western province of Anbar.

A force from Anbar's Operations Command uncovered the ammunition cache during an operation in the area of Wadi al-Qadhif in Anbar desert, the Iraqi Defense Ministry said in a statement.

Nasir al-Ghannam, commander of Anbar's Operations Command, said that the ammunition cache contains 570 newly-made explosive belts, bombs, hand grenades and anti-tank mines.

The place was used by IS militants to store their ammunition before distributing them to carry out attacks in the cities of Anbar province and in the Iraqi capital Baghdad, the statement said.

In a separate operation, another force from Anbar Operations Command, in cooperation with civilians in the province, captured two wanted IS militants, the statement added, without giving further details.

'Is the Earth unique?' Water detected in atmosphere of exoplanet

K2-18b is the only planet beyond our solar system known to have water vapor and temperatures that could support life.

Astronomers at the Centre for Space Exochemistry Data at the University College London (UCL) detected water vapour in the atmosphere of the K2-18b "exoplanet," a planet outside our solar system, between the mass of Earth and Neptune, that also has the right temperatures that could support life.

The team used data from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope to find water vapour in the atmosphere of K2-18b, by analysing starlight filtered through the exoplanet's atmosphere. The report was published in the journal Nature Astronomy on Wednesday.
